** UPDATED RESULTS 3/13 ** Shooting quickly vs shooting slowly?

I have two regulated rifles. My BSA S10 was regulated from the factory and I can shoot it as fast as I can cycle the bolt without any drop in velocity. I have an S510 that I put a huma regulator in and again when shooting strings over the chrony I can shoot as fast as I can cycle the side lever. So both of my regulated rifles dont take extra time for the regulator to fill. My thoughts on regulators needing 10 seconds or more to fill again would point towards an issue.

I agree with the 2 previous posts, a regulator should not need any time between shots, the pressure inside the tube remains constant and the feed to the regulator remains constant so it should not make any difference how fast you shoot. If the regulators had a very slow fill and a lot of air to fill for each shot then it might be understandable but that is not my understanding of how regulators work, Neil.

I suppose if you had the pcp tuned very poorly so that the regulators plenum was completely dumped and it had to be filled there would be a delay. If thats whats happening then the rifle needs to be properly tuned.

My Impact refills in about 1 second. I know this because I actually shot a video of it to share with you all. I took out the reg gauge, added a fitting, a tee, a bleeder valve on one side and a 2.5" gauge on the other. (I would NOT recommend doing this as it is a lot of strain on those fine threads and can EASILY destroy your rifle if knocked around!) Then I set up the camera to watch the gauge and started shooting.
The first round was shot slow to see if the reg was actually filling back up to the same spot, or if there were fluctuations. Result: it's doing its job!
The second round I let loose and shot as fast as I could which was about 1 second between shots. I could probably shoot a little faster but, I had to aim or risk shooting through the garage wall. Result: It certainly looked like it was keeping up to me! It's a little tough to see with the card table moving all around.
Normally, when I'm shooting chrony work, I just take my time and try to stay steady with 3-5 seconds between shots.
Actually, I've noticed that with the Impact, you can hear the second reservoir refill between shots.
I'll try to get that video edited & posted soon. I've been insanely busy lately so, don't hold your breath. :)

Here's a pic. Mind the pressure, it was during tuning and that's not what I'm set at anymore.

Wow, detailed experiment that is exactly the kind of information that I'm looking for, thank you for posting that Tom! I'm inclined to think after the chrony work I've done the last few days that my experiment tomorrow will likely tell the same story. I can't wait to see the video you post about it, I'm subscribed to your channel so I'll keep an eye out for it.

Cliff

OK well here are the results of the two strings I shot this morning. 1st string shot with me timing 15 seconds between shots on a stopwatch. The second string almost as fast as I could cock the lever and shoot the gun. Both strings were shot with the starting pressure at 220 bar. Each string was 66 shots, six full mags.

I have 4 mags for the royale so I was able to shoot both strings pretty consistently with a pause after shot 44 to load two empty mags to keep shooting. I accidentally deleted the first string (15 seconds between shots) from the chrony before writing down the stats, i.e., SD, Average, etc.

Also, it did occur to me that because I was shooting so fast on the second string I was able to hold the gun more consistently between shots. I was stopping to write down velocity of the shots on the first string (15 sec intervals) because I knew I was going to have to delete the first string to record the second one. I wonder if that had any impact on the results.

First string - 15 seconds between shots

Second string stats, 1 second between shots
Hi -- 864
Low - 843
Average - 855
ES -- 21
SD -- 4

I would say by the looks of the two strings the reg needed no settle time. Thats the way it should be. Anyone who has to wait to take a second shot with a regulated rifle has an issue with the regulator or tune. This is just my experience and I could be totally wrong but it doesnt make much sense to have a regulated rifle that you have to wait 6+ seconds between shots to keep it regulated.
