TX200HC with Vortek PG3

I was not getting the accuracy I wanted from my TX200HC and decided to try to improve things by replacing my Vortek 15 ft-lb PG2 with a 12 ft-lb Vortek PG3. This picture shows the stock components and PG2 compared to the PG3 on top.

The PG3 is a new design that features open coils and a top hat design with multiple notches for the spring end that allow about an 1/8" adjustment for fine tuning power. The kit also has a longer top hat, but a shorter guide as shown by the position of the blue marks. As pictured the kit has 30 coils, but to dial in the power that had to be reduced to 27 1/2 coils, which was easily done with the open coil design. Average velocity with JSB 7.87 pellets was 821 fps giving 11.8 ft-lb energy. As usual with the Vortek kits cocking and firing behavior was very smooth. The reduction in power made cocking much more pleasant, and I did find the gun easier to shoot accurately. Here are a couple groups from my sighting in session that show the potential. These were shot from sitting at 35 yards in a very light wind.

And for those hunters out there, the wife had to leave for a while so that gave me an opportunity to try for the chipmunk that is making his home under my sidewalk. At 22 yards with a gun shooting this well a clean head shot wasn't even a challenge.

The only hunting the wife really accepts as necessary is to remove the House Sparrows and Starlings that compete for our Swallow, Bluebird and Woodpecker nest boxes, and that one deer that replinishes our freezer each year. The Sparrows in particular are nasty little buggers that will kill the Swallows if they are not taken care of promptly.

And yes, 12 ft-lb is plenty for critters up to the size of a rabbit. Normally I would use a PCP for most hunting or pest removal, but my dive shop is closed so I have had to sharpen my springer shooting skills. Not a bad thing, I have actually enjoyed the experience.
