Twist Rate? What Twist Rate?!

It’s widely accepted that slugs require a certain twist rate & speed to shoot accurately. But that has never stopped me from experimenting and discovering.

Here’s a 5 shot group out of my @KalibrGun Cricket Carbine Mini shooting NSA 17.2gr 22 Cal Slugs at 30 yards. I don’t even know the gun’s twist rate, and Frankly my Dear….. So consistent in fact, that I took a squirrel with one right after shooting this group.

*Not sure if I would have gotten any better results with a 10x scope, but this group was achieved with a 4x scope.

Distance to target?

A choke can manipulate things up close. When you start shooting past 50 yards it’s going to be difficult to dupe physics if you want the best accuracy your barrel is capable of. With the assortment of slugs available, it’s entirely possible for many guns to be OK short range slug guns. Most will be weeded out once they get out past 80.
One of these days when I get a life & my wife gives me permission, I will go to a proper range to test beyond 50 & see what I see. Most of my shooting is inside of 40 yards, so knowing what would work or not at shorter distances is good enough for me for now.

The nice thing is if you never have to shoot over 50 and feel you absolutely must use slugs, things can be a lot less complicated. As long as it’s safe to shoot them in those situations. Just like pellets I’ve had tiny slug groups at 50 go completely south by 75-80. Tightening those pellet groups is generally easier.
Even that I technically don’t even need to do. I do it just to do it. To learn what possibilities exist, sometimes just to make a point. Inside of 40 yards there’s nothing that a Hades can’t take care of. Now, the Makos, those are another story. Wicked expansion at Sub-12fpe with no pass through and excellent accuracy.
