Turret Tape or Holdover?

I'm old and easily confused. I try to remember my zero, and hold for everything. I think I'm going to start setting my zero at the apex of trajectory, so everything else is holdover, never under. That seems to be very popular in HFT, and I don't know why it wouldn't work everywhere. Holding under isn't natural for me.

Never considered the Apex, thanks for that. Most of my shots are about 50 yards, and then some beyond. I mark my POIs with blue tape on my cheek rest or stock.

Holdover. I have a range card with proven and tested distances. I'm not real sure I totally understand why you have to have the target smack dab in the middle of the cross hairs.

What do you do if you run out of turret adjustment?

Hold over??

I use exclusively FFP. Low end Athlons to be exact. Then, regardless of magnification, my holdover won't change. I get the advantage of using exactly the FOV I want in case another tango stumbles into range. Hundreds of prairie dogs were dispatched last year and this year with this method.

As for the ammo, I only shoot the ammo that's the most accurate.

Regarding .177 ammo, I use the heavier 13.4 Monsters for shots >50 yards for ethical kills. I use the 10.34 Hades for shots <50 yards. I don't chamber my round till I have acquired a target, so I can decide my pellet choice as needed.

It depends on how much preparation you are willing to do. I used Holdover the first couple of years until I found the Scope Werks turrets. The way I set my turret up is marked in yardage. So I laser the target, turn to the measured yardage and pull the trigger. Just as fast as holdover and no real thought involved, no mistakes with “busy” reticles, no guessing if I’m holding the right marked windage, since I’m always on the center crosshairs which are marked MIL or MOA. It also doesn’t matter if your scope is MIL or MOA since you’re dialing the yardage. Photo below is .22 EDGun R3 Long NSA 20.2 slug @985 FPS after I had just schwacked a ground squirrel at 176 yards. You can see the turret on 176 if you look close. And I clicked - hold your breath - a Chinese made scope! Say it isn’t so! ;) I’ve had nothing but success clicking my Athlon Midas TAC 6-24x50 Scope. Highly recommended.
