Turning down .25 cal to minimize FPE

I’m looking to turn down my FX WC MK3 Compact to sub 12fpe. I shoot in an area with a lot of potential for collateral damage and want to minimize the chances. 25 yard range max. With 25gr pellets, this puts it somewhere around 450fps. When I turn the hammer spring down to 1, it shoots 680fps so I have quite a ways to go. Has anyone shot 25 cal at this speed? What kind of accuracy should I expect?

I can't give you any FX help, but I can share that I have one of my Leshiy's turned down to a hair under 600fps and it is ridiculously accurate with several different pellets. I'm obviously making more than 12fpe, but other than the looping trajectory, I don't see why you should have any accuracy issues and i think you will be pleasantly surprised.

This isn’t really for the Wildcat, but yesterday I got a Taipan Compact in 25 cal and today I playing with the hammer spring adjustment. I am shooting 26 gr Hades. I got muzzle velocity around 450 to 460 FPS which came out to around 12 ft/lbs, and these speed is what you can expect from your Wildcat. For me these velocities for 25 cal is not far off throwing rocks, but 12 FPS is 12 FPS. I do though have an Impact compact in .22 and I am working on “down tuning” the impact so I do have a min setting around 12 ft/lbs. I still have more to do, but I know you need to adjust the tuning regulator down to around 80 Bar.

Below is some chronograph data from my FX Chrony when I was messing with the power adjustment on the Hammer spring. Again this is with a 26ish grain Hades, so you can use the velocity numbers as a reference to do the math for ft/lbs.

The UK (sub 12ft) reg setting is around 50bar, BUT DO NOT do this as the FAC version of the gun has different hammer spring and valve settings according to what I have read.

"DO NOT" as in you may damage your gun and void your warranty.

Have a look at the schematic, does the .25 use a hammer weight? If so you can pull it out and it'll drop your speed considerably. I'm able to tune a Royale 500 to those speeds by doing that and making the hammer just strong enough to crack the valve open. Drop the reg to even 100bar and you should get there.

I don't know how well the Wildcat will shoot them, but you might also consider the lighter H&N FTT 20gr .25 pellet. I've been shooting it out of my Leshiy 250mm barrel at 600 fps (~16fpe) and it does a very nice job out to 40 yards.

The Diana 25 domes are the same as H&N FTT and often cheaper when price shopping. They shoot great at slow speeds.

Go with a pellet that will expand, so the penetration will be small, try the polymags, Baracuda Hunters, Crow Magnum I have a wooden fence on my backyard and shooting any of those at 50fpe doesn't go all the way on the wood.

I shoot in areas where collateral damage is a concern, if it’s close range,( less than 20yards) try putting the pellets in backwards, they are surprisingly accurate, flattening like pancakes when they hit so damage is minimal but devastating on vermin.

I don’t know if the mag and probe of a wildcat will allow backward pellets, if it does, give it a try, and no this is not a joke.

Someone mentioned try shooting the pellets backwards a while back and everyone didn't believe him. I tried it and it works. Matter of fact some real crappy pellets shot more accurately backwards.

Shooting the lightest weight pellets helps minimize overpentration and collateral damage to surroundings.

Sounds like an opportunity to buy a sub 12 fpe .177! Don't know if it would be more accurate, but I expect it might. It's a perfect application for it, but mainly, you get a new rifle, always a good thing.

Change out your transfer port to one of Ernest’s, where you can index the barrel and get an even lower speed due to a tiny transfer port hole on one side of the brass thimble.

If you do it right, you can go from low to medium power just by rotating the barrel.

Yea a 12fpe 177 and if you have the means a 177 Steyr Hunting 5 Semiauto cranked down is a real blast to shoot rats with really quick. Or if you got 5 bird's in a row to shoot real quick all before they fly off (well maybe hit 3-4 consecutively before they fly off)

I accidentally loaded a pellet backwards in my .177. My chrony showed a sudden drop of 300 fps and I thought I had a real problem. The pellet hit the target just fine. My next shot was back to 900+ and I thought it was just a fluke. Then I realized what had happened, tried it again and the backwards pellet shot just fine but at an appreciable lower fps. it works.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I tried loading a pellet backwards, but the Wildcat didn’t like that. It felt like I really had to jam it in there. I think I’ll consider preordering an Avenger in .177 and use that.
