Turkey season opener in NorCal

Beautiful weather but the usual places were berefit of birds. I texted a property, and they said they had squirrels, so I headed over there around noon.

Got a little beaver and heard turkey's in the distance.

The owners were nearby, big bird lovers. I started talking them. telling them how good they are to eat.

They said if I could call one in, go for it.

It was on!

Took about an hour, had three groups circling the property until this one entered the fence line. I had a bird to the left, another coming in from a hill behind me, and this guy.

.30 urugan, 44 grain pellets at 65 yards.

I've the pellets going 900 fps. Your taipan is gonna slay 'em. I've used .177 w 18 ft/lbs and they dropped right there.

The neck needs to be broken if you aren't certain that you can hit the little spot right behind the eye. Using the neck, you've a 2-4" column 3/4" of an inch or wider to aim at.

You can see my first shot broke the neck as he stretched his head upwards and then I brained him when he wasn't moving as much.

He was a big un, usually the neck shot puts them right into their death throes, or I can go up and crush the brain. The owner of the property didn't want me to scare off future birds that may visit, they enjoy the animals. You can see the hens rushing over to give the brute a couple of quick kicks at the end, and when cleaning him later on the property, other males and hens walked by us unperturbed.

They were so leary earlier, skittish as all get out. I shared it took a bit of time to bring them onto the property, but by using an air gun, keeping away from the kill until their curiosity abated, and ignoring the rest of the birds, the flock is not patterned that they are being hunted. I've a young lad I'll bring out later this season to get his 2nd turkey ( got a big hen last fall) and hope to continue to take birds without alerting the rest.

Good luck out there, taking a friend to a new spot today.
