Vingaroon is easily made with white vinegar and fine steel wool. Let it sit for a week or two. You don't need or want the sludge at the bottom, decant the clear stuff from the top. It reacts with the tannins in whatever you put it on. With leather, I just do a quick dip in the vinegaroon, a few moments to watch the black develop, then a dip in a baking soda bath to neutralize the acid. There's a good chance the leather will break down over time without it. With wood, I just wipe it on and let it go. So far, nothing bad has happened with the few small items I've used it on and it oils up nicely.
