Trying to pull the trigger

He has 40 center fire and 6 air. Says you need 18 ft. lb. to kill and .177 does not deliver. Crow

An air rifle w/ 18 fpe is helpful to kill, sure. Given how there are plenty of air rifles (including break barrels) in .177 that have 18 fpe or more ...he obviously doesn't know what he is talking about. Heck, the limit on fpe in the UK for air rifles in either .177 or .22 is 12 fpe and they have no trouble killing most critters.

Perhaps, HE needs at least 18 fpe to kill because he isn't as good a shot as you are? Like I said before, he sounds jealous of you. Could be you could use a new mentor. Could be you could mentor him on making brain shots on critters. (I suspect that's how the Brits do it).

High fpe is great; but accuracy is #1.

By way of an example, here's an 18+ fpe .177:

Tell your bud about the Gamo G2 Magnum .177. These guys got 1179 fps / 23.8 fpe w/ Gamo 7.8 gr Redfires. W/ magnum springers like that rifle, one would be better off using 10+ gr pellets for best accuracy. They were having good luck w/ 15 gr H&N sniper magnums.

H&N Barracuda Match 10.65 gr - 948 fps / 21.26 fpe - best accuracy w/ these.

The tester also tried Gamo Redfires which had a lower velocity than the the above vid for 1105 fps / 21.15 fpe.

While I guess using large calibers to hunt birds with looks cool on camera, it's completely unnecessary and in most cases dangerous. Large bird Pesting situations on a more professional level do not require large calibers, especially when shooting up in the air. Now that slugs have become the new fad I see little discussion on safety. Those slugs travel much further than most realize and carry so much energy with them. The goal is to eliminate as many birds as possible and as safely as we can without causing damage to property and other animals (and people). Most of the large permissions I hunt do have livestock, this makes using large calibers something of a liability. Using a .177 is not unethical at all, especially on the level of shooting birds that require very little energy to ethically kill. Get within reach of that caliber, we aren't playing military sniper here but doing a job that needs to be done. Whomever told you this obviously has no experience with hunting large commercial properties.

I think the very first gun I got was a Benjamin Discovery .22 than a HW90 .25. I might have pumped that Discovery 4 times. Not going to happen again. Jumped out of frying pan into the fire with the HW90. Jack the 90 a few times, heats up the shoulder a bit much. A member on this forum just told me last week I can turn down the pressure.
I’ve known him (mentor) for over 50 yrs. He has his opinion, I don’t have the same tunnel vision. Not long after I was introduced to air rifles COVID-19 hit been in a bubble since. In lockdown now.
I’m not internet surfer and fluke I got here on this forum. When everyone talked .177 at first I’m shaking my head. Usually something drips off repetition, so I got a few and have to admit their awesome.

Put 200 rounds through FBW, already easier to jack.

I have to thank everyone for helping me stray into .177. Crow
