I took a couple of my rifles out shooting today. I have to admit, I have not done a lot of shooting. Ever. With a high power .177.
Color me impressed. Non-existent recoil impulse, extremely low air consumption, near silent report, and that flat trajectory!
I think for my locale (lots of woods, and little wind) this might be the ticket!
The gun is a Hatsan Nova Star. I've done a lot of work to it fixing problems here and there. The gun is also detuned for several reasons. The barrel has some low and high spots in the bore, but the choke is tight. The twist rate is either 18:1 or 17.7:1, not %100 sure which, but I have done my best to measure it. I have lapped it a bit, as well, to loosen it up for slugs. But not so much that it won't shoot pellets. It does group monster RD's extremely well @920fps. And I'm honestly finding the monsters retain a lot more speed at distance than any .22 pellet I've used. I've been shooting NSA 12gr slugs with it as well, and they do nearly as good. But do get a flier here and there. I need to get some griffin slugs to test out.
Shooting at various distances out to 75 yards... I almost never shoot for groups, today being no exception. I considered it, but was having too much fun shooting how I normally do. Honestly just shooting whatever target I want, however I want. Most standing rested. Some crouched, some standing free-hand. I didn't pull out my bipods, table, chair, or sandbag, although I did have them. I don't ever use those when actually hunting, so just as well I don't practice with them. But are great for testing/dialing in a gun.
The un-regulated Hatsan yields a solid 80 shot string @28FPE with a SD of 8.4 FPS. using a .22 caliber barrel. This .177 barrel uses noticeably less air.
And hits very hard at range.
If you haven't tried out a "high powered" .177, you might want to give it a shot
