I spent the summer chasing chipmunks and the occasional squirrel with Penny. I did quite a few posts showing us hunting with different air rifles.

Penny’s a bird dog. She was always meant to be a bird dog. She was hunting last fall at seven months, lots of practice with chukers . You never know what you’re going to get when you buy a dog, I was really hoping she would hunt birds.
I had a bit of a chipmunk problem this year. When I walked outside they would all start chirping. It sounded like hundreds. Definitely needed to thin the herd. What a great opportunity to pull a few old air guns out of the safe. And I decided it was also a great opportunity to learn to hunt with my new dog.

i’m sure there are many dog training experts who are cringing at this idea. I’ll be honest, I was wondering if it would come back to bite me. But Penny is very smart. I knew she could figure it out.
we’ve been out hunting Birds this year numerous times. About two weeks ago, the switch finally clicked for her. She figured out we were hunting these big birds…Now she’s an absolute machine. And she’s only a year and a half old.
she’s flushing birds I would’ve never had a clue were there. She actually pointed a couple birds for me this week. She would occasionally do that with chipmunks.
She made the transition in a wonderful fashion. And we will be hunting chipmunks next summer. What a treat it is to watch her in the field!
Some of the pictures are hunting scratch birds at the game farm. We did limit out one day on wild birds in Iowa. Something that’s almost impossible with one guy and his dog.
I’m so glad we spent the time together this summer hunting chipmunks with airguns.
