Training a bird dog with airguns and Varmints

I spent the summer chasing chipmunks and the occasional squirrel with Penny. I did quite a few posts showing us hunting with different air rifles.

Penny’s a bird dog. She was always meant to be a bird dog. She was hunting last fall at seven months, lots of practice with chukers . You never know what you’re going to get when you buy a dog, I was really hoping she would hunt birds.

I had a bit of a chipmunk problem this year. When I walked outside they would all start chirping. It sounded like hundreds. Definitely needed to thin the herd. What a great opportunity to pull a few old air guns out of the safe. And I decided it was also a great opportunity to learn to hunt with my new dog.

i’m sure there are many dog training experts who are cringing at this idea. I’ll be honest, I was wondering if it would come back to bite me. But Penny is very smart. I knew she could figure it out.

we’ve been out hunting Birds this year numerous times. About two weeks ago, the switch finally clicked for her. She figured out we were hunting these big birds…Now she’s an absolute machine. And she’s only a year and a half old.

she’s flushing birds I would’ve never had a clue were there. She actually pointed a couple birds for me this week. She would occasionally do that with chipmunks.

She made the transition in a wonderful fashion. And we will be hunting chipmunks next summer. What a treat it is to watch her in the field!

Some of the pictures are hunting scratch birds at the game farm. We did limit out one day on wild birds in Iowa. Something that’s almost impossible with one guy and his dog.

I’m so glad we spent the time together this summer hunting chipmunks with airguns.

Can't beat taking a dog out with you. I use salukis as I do a lot of coursing (running hares) with them my young bitch has been catching rabbit since 6/7 month old now she's taken a liking for roe deer 🙈 I've had her with me from 8 week old everytime I leave the house and she's just started retrieving shot birds pheasant/wood pigeon/doves A to top it off she follows my son everywhere even sleeps at the end of his bed.

That is awesome. It’s interesting because they are very similarly shaped, and size.

It would be nice if every single child could have their own dog to sleep at the end of their bed.

They're best pals. She knows when he's due home from school and waits for him in the front yard but gets agitated pacing when he leaves in the morning. Reminds me of when I was young I had a bedlington terrier cross with a whippet and 2 working cocker spaniels the spaniels were nuts. She would escape and come to school about 1 1/2 miles away from home. The teachers ended up getting her a bowl for food and water at the main entrance 🤣

That’s awesome!
We have two more dogs at home. This one’s mine. My son comes home from school every day and crawls into the pen with the two dogs and chills. They lie on top of each other. It’s very cool.

This picture is from today, we snuck out to the game farm for scratch hunting. That’s when you just walk the fields hoping to get some birds that the others missed. We picked up four in two hours. Penny was absolutely flawless.

All of the training was just her and I, out in the field with pheasant wings. And then I transitioned to live chukars. I think the chipmunk hunting really helped. She listens really well.

It looks like I have three male pheasants in that photo, plus one hen black pheasant, and a chukar.

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t know what the black bird was and I’m not familiar with chukars. I’ve also never hunted with dogs that retrieve game. How do you train them not to eat or bite the carcasses too hard?

Hunting with a dog implies three times more fun.

I have always had Labradors. Ducks and doves are retrieved always by my hunting partners.

This year, around May, my female 2 year old Labrador died (maybe an scorpion or snake bit it on the night) she was already a champ. During a picnic with all family "Laska" found a jack rabbit and ran behind it untill reach it and bring it to us. At the seen of all of us. Amazing!

Now I am training to the successor, it has 5 months and last weekend was his first contact with water. Went for a duck in a lake at 15 yards from the shore and brought it to me.

Many years ago I saw a dog following the trace of a bobcat arrowed. It was amazing the accuracy to find it among bushes.

A good dog is a real companion for hunting. It is a pleasure to look them work.

This is Luka.

There is nothing in the world like when that big huge cackling colorful bird bursts of the grass right at your feet…Or gets up behind you or runs to the end of the row and flies where you can’t get a shot at him.

And man oh man do they taste good. And believe it or not they are of course invasive species. But try to explain to that one to someone from either South Dakota or Iowa.
