Took Penny for a walk last night at dusk, ran into a big coon

And the only reason Penny was on a leash, is because the farmer next-door was picking his crops. I was afraid penny would go in there running through the corn 🌽 and get eaten by his machine. I have trouble keeping her out of the crops, I’m sure she smells the deer.

normally she runs off and she comes pretty well when I call her back. But it’s not unusual at all for her to be 100 yards plus ahead of me. I like her to be able to run. She loves it.

We came around the corner and headed into the woods, right down the path we would normally take. And midway down towards the bottom of the ravine, We run into a big bad raccoon.

I’m pretty sure, had Penny been off leash, she would’ve ran straight out it. And a year old golden doodle against a full grown raccoon, no contest. I don’t like to even think about it, I’ve seen big full size dogs fight raccoons. The raccoons are better fighters. If I were even 50 yards behind her, I don’t think I would’ve had a chance to intervene.

he actually growled at me before he ran off. My response, your ass is grass…stay tuned, Public enemy number one has been identified.

I will be packing the 22 Magnum pistol for future walks. But I hope I can get him with an air gun from my Deerstand.

Raccoons can be nasty little $#@%ers. Have had a few dogs get mixed up in the past, and always resulted in expensive vet bills. Coons didn't fare well either, usually eating some lead once the skirmish was over. Started tearing up shingles on the roof a few years ago, .22 40gr solved that problem.

Always take my 357 with me walking in the woods. Pigs, mountain lions and even feral dogs and such, never had to use it, but you never know. Hope you get him.

Raccoons is what got me into PCP airguns. I had a family of those things tear down my soffit and get into my crawl space. Then they would crawl between the insulation in my walls, and I could hear those bastards breathing with my wife's stethoscope! Set up a blind and took the first one out with a Hatsan Bullboss .25 cal pushing H&N Grizzlies. After that, I had to use a foot trap, because I couldn't stay up all night waiting for them to take the bait. I ended up talking 5 of those pest then, and 4 years later, they still come back and try to get in my house. It's like I'm pinned on Raccoon Google Maps or something!
