Took my air rifle to the rimfire rifle match last weekend

We have a small rim fire rifle match at the local range once a month and last weekend I asked to take my air rifle. When they said yes I had a very evil grin on my face because I know how accurate the FX Bobcat is! So how the match works is there are 5 paper targets set at 50 yards. First target is your sight in target and target 2, 3, and 4 are your scoring targets with the rifle on the bench. At the bench you have to place 5 shots in each target to score. The 5th and final target is standing supported and again you need to place 5 shots into the target to score. All of this needs to be completed within a 15 minute time limit. I had a 10 mph cross wind from the left to the right and I can't even explain the satisfaction I felt watching my pellets drift 2"-3" to the right and land right in the 10 ring! It wasn't a big crowd at the range ,but I still got the highest score for the day by 1 point! Scored 197 points out of 200. I typically shoot with a 17 hmr and score in the high 180's and low 190's. So I got my best all time score last weekend with an air rifle! Anyways, just thought I'd share!

To be honest I was hoping to show people there what air rifles are capable of these days. I don't know if I converted anyone exactly ,but I have a pretty good feeling when they got home they did some more research on pcp air rifles. Air rifle used was a FX Bobcat .25

When I took the air rifle out of the bag and laid it on the table, there was an immediate crowd gathered around it and a volley of questions on everything about it. I told them the accuracy I was able to achieve with it at 50 and even at 100 yards and some seemed a little skeptical at first. When I put some shots down range and the time came for us to look at our targets at the 50 yard line, the look on their faces was priceless. I've been going to this range for the last 5 years so I'm not really a stranger and when they realized that they were beat by an air rifle there were no hard feelings, just more questions about it! Of course I didn't technically win that day because my best score was with an air rifle, but I was (still am) very thankful that the range master of the shoot gave me the opportunity to try my bb gun. The range master also said that I may of possibly opened up a new class of shooters in the future!

Back in 2004 I did the same with my .22 FX Excalibre/Tarantula on a 50 metre smallbore range.
Placed second to an Anschutz rf but the airgun beat the rest. 50, 49, 47, 47, 193/200in some wind.

Hm, you'd think PCPs have to be beating PBs by a large margin, considering how much more predictable the PCP ought to be. Just thinking about all the factors that play a role in a PB cartridge, the explosions, brass, primer, powder .... , and its amazing they can be as accurate as they are, and in good hands, edge out air rifles in terms of MOA accuracy.

Under half inch group at 600 yards, apparently. I'd be happy with that size group at 1/10th the distance from a PCP.

Seeing this makes me wonder why PCPs are not more accurate than what we are used to. Ammo?

I think that it is important that CJ_68 was a known person at the match before he asked to bring his air rifle. The range master in this story was open to the idea of having Air rifles at the match. This is not often the case. Sometimes it is due to snobbishness, but more often it is because folks have spent a lifetime on their skills and there gear.

Those who use terms like embarrass or convert should go back and read CJ's posts. He is just the shooter to introduce air rifles to the world of firearms.

When accurate air rifles ment 10 meter, there was little chance of an air rifle at at a 50 foot galery match. Now there are formal and informal matches at distanced like 50 yards that attract very accurate sporting rifles. This is where air rifles can show their stuff.
