Took my 8 yo grandson on his first pesting session

And he loved it. I set him up with an Mrod Air plinkster in .177 that my uncle gave me for him. I put a 3x9x40 scope on it and we sighted it in at 25 yards. He had a blast even though he was missing a lot. He needs a little more practice with the scope and holding steady. Some of the shots were pretty far and as it happens that is how he got the starling tagging it at 50 yards on top of a grain bin. Lol. He also got a spatsie but it fell in the barn and couldn't retrieve it. He cant wait to go again.

So this year was his first year hunting and he got two squirrels with his .410 Rossi. Then I took him and his older sister deer hunting with me so they could see what it was all about. As luck would have it we were sitting in my truck warming up after being out for an hour or so and he blurts out "theres a deer". Sure enough a buck was walking in front of my truck about 30 yards away. He dissapeared over a small hill so Mason and me jumped out and I loaded the Marlin .357 with a couple rounds then went to peek over the hill. The buck was about 65 yards away facing away from us so I lined him up in the scope and shot him from right rear to left front angling down. He only went about 60 or 70 yards piling up just inside the woods. I let the kids track him and find him. It was the best deer hunt I have ever been on. Next year he should be big enough to shoot so I bought us a two man ladder stand to use..

I mounted the antlers and gave to him for Christmas.

Great times

Thanks for all the compliments guys.

I just love taking my grandkids out hunting and they love it too. Their dad, my son, doesn't seem to have time for hunting so I make up for it with them. They always want to help when I'm reloading and any time I'm shooting they want to shoot. Now I'm taking them hunting and may go out for squirrels this weekend if it doesn't rain. I need to break in my new to me used Huben K1 .22.

Thank you for sharing that Randy! That is a truly a great thing that you are doing. Spending the time and effort that it takes to raise and teach a young fella to hunt, handle firearms, etc. We have to do these things to insure the future. I have a three year old grandson and can't wait for the time to come.....shooting, hunting, fishing, etc. 😁
