Too much light

Yesterday I was just horsing around shooting targets. It was a gorgeous day. There were several times when I could not see the crosshairs in my scope, too much brightness. When I cupped my hand around the scope and my eye I could see it better. I noticed in pictures on this forum some guys have, like a hood over their scope or eyepiece. I think I need some.

what are they called?

I've seen them called eye cups and eye shades. You need to know the size of the scope where the eye cup will attach. Many models are available. Just do a search.

Sun shade screws onto the objective and an eye cup is used on the ocular end.

I prefer Bisley eye cups. Soft enough to mold to your face arround your eye.

A quick and simple solution is to try wearing a hat when shooting.

Bisley eye cup is what the FT folks have been using for a long time.

I myself would like to find several of them but truly haven't checked on availability as I just use a dark tee shirt or any other cloth that might be handy if the sun starts coming my way.

If light is striking your eye directly, an eye cup will make a dramatic difference but you will very likely also have too much light entering the scope, in which case you will benefit from a conventional shade or honeycomb shade on the objective bell.

The UTG is a bit stiff. I modified mine heavily (shortened and drastically sculpted the eye piece). In the end, it was perfect. That was on a .25 M-rod. I would look for something else if getting another one. It took a lot of trim/try/trim/try/trim/try time.

A quick and simple solution is to try wearing a hat when shooting.

Sounds simple but it does work. Rarely find me not wearing a hat and sunglasses if I'm outdoors. Brim of my hat sits right on top of my scope or right above it. Blocks sun out and always a sunshade on my scopes also.

Shooting directly into the sun can be a big problem and it’s also sometimes a problem when the sun is directly behind you. That’s when the hat or eye cup can help. 
This really can be challenging if you are using a thru the lens filming device. I’ve had times when I just could not film due to the position of the sun. Days when it’s extremely bright are also a problem.

I just use the included rubber eye cup thats included with the MTC VIPER Connect to use on other scopes.
