To the dome on a coon last week with the JSAR Raptor 22

Last week I picked up this coon with the Jsar Raptor shooting NSA slugs in 22 cal moving at 915 FPS to the dome. A single shot was all it took.

First blood on the Raptor. It was also the last week of the open season..

@sasquatch What’s to criticize? Death throes are to be expected with head shots. What type of slug? Hollow? Round nose? Wadcutter? Semi-wad? How many grains?

This was a Nielsen Specialty Ammo slug .218 20.2 grains. I like this brand. It's always in stock, it's affordable, there are so many options I can usually find one that works in most of my air rifles.

They are these hollow points with the dish base like in this image below.

@Sasquatch Nice selection. They’re pretty affordable for that level of quality compared to others. Do you usually get good expansion? How’d the wound cavity look on that raccoon after plowing through its skull? That’s a sophisticated looking rig. I’ve never seen one in person. What type of scope is that?

On the expansion - I didn't dig it out of the skull. But the results spoke for themselves without doing so. I am not sure I need a lot of expansion if it thumps the brain like that. Given that with this setup I don't shoot anything larger than a coon, expansion is kind of an afterthought here.

I have seen some recent videos where people are comparing expansion into gel but a lot of them are incomplete (not testing a lot of different ammo at different speeds), shooting ammo into the same area as previous shots and therefore ruining the test results, etc. For the most part I believe expansion is important but to a degree. I believe the placement of the shot is often even more important. I suspect a lot of those gel expansion tests are incomplete because of the prohibitive costs of the gel to buy or the fragile nature of the gel itself in warm conditions. In any case, I am not going to indulge in that.

The scope is the ATN X-Sight 4K pro in 3-14 power. I have a Streamlight TLR-1 IR light to shine some IR light down onto the shooting area. That makes the scope look busy but it's a necessity for night time. The scope itself is real good for low light situations around evening and morning, as well as obviously at night and daytime. I wish I could get video at 240 fps. On the scope I did end up purchasing a focus knob (you can obviously purchase other cheaper options if you like) from here https://smwengineering.co.uk/products/focus-lever-for-atn-x-sight-4k?_pos=2&_sid=14911e494&_ss=r and I really prefer this addition.

Nice shot. My buddy got a Raptor in .25 and they are a beast. Keep the posts coming.

The rifle itself performs incredibly well and I have still not even attempted to push it to it's limits (not even close). I cannot stand the magazine. When the magazine works, it's fantastic. When it skips a round and cycles beyond the barrel it's a disaster. Within a week the tiny fragment of aluminum which was supposed to prevent this from happening broke. However, the mag works still, with issues..

I sent an email to JSAR regarding the crappy magazine but those people never responded. It's been about 30 days now and I am also due a second magazine which they left a note saying I would get one when the new version is designed and manufactured. Sure but I am not buying their "we're too busy building airguns to respond to emails" PR. It's crap. They have backed up on production because of shortages recently so they cannot respond to shortcomings on their expensive magazines? Any response is probably better than their silence. They need a lesson in customer service and perhaps to hire someone to design their magazines so they can take their product to the next level.

@sasquatch Gotcha. I asked about expansion because I’ve read some comments where some members claim that with a good hollow point a .22 can do the same damage as a .25 with expansion. Not a point I try to argue either way, but I am curious about that claim. Either way that was a good shot.

The video quality on that ATN is nice. You had some other cameras in the mix down range. They had good clarity as well. I like the setup.

I have not compared expansion between 22 and 25 and it is somewhat interesting. If I did such a test I'd like to try many different speeds on each ammo. Then there's the question: Even if the expansion is ideal at a given speed, does my rifle group well at that speed with the ammo? So there's more to that idea to think about for me.

The down range camera is the Campark T100. I found it on eBay for 100 dollars shipped. So far its been really good. I have 2.

It's worth mentioning that you can add something like a portable Mr Beams down range to supplement the light for filming and I also use one as an alert as I can see the light from inside. These are real good. I have been using them on my front walkway for the past year in all weather conditions with excellent battery life.
