To load or not to load.....

Guys,

Just wondering how many of us practice this. Leaving a loaded spring magazine on standby vs loading it when you are about to shoot. Reason is to have it ready when you see a little nutter, cock the rifle and blast him away. Vs, loading and potentially having missed the opportunities.

I actually have a Mag on standby. But the dilemma would be the wear and tear on the spring tension. Let me know.

I could go into greater detail about this but you shouldn't worry about leaving a spring loaded or in its normal state. It will not fatigue unless it hits a compression or expansion limit which is very unlikely in a magazine, if it did it would malfunction very quickly. After all, You probably worry very little about your hammer spring which goes from a loaded state to an unloaded state very quickly and much more often than your magazine spring. You will be fine leaving it filled.

Depends on the mag, I leave them loaded but release the spring tension like on a Daystate mag. That way, you can quickly wind or not wind and still get a single shot.

or like most pcp users - you probably have more than one. For your quick pester, use the mags that have no spring or ones that have spring that can be left loaded but unwound.

i have no expertise on wear and tear of a mag spring but I do know most pcp mags are heinously expensive. I choose to leave unwound because I don't want to buy more than I need to.

Good examples of no spring preload = Wildcat, crickets,AA s410/510, hw100

Good examples of mags that can be loaded but unwound = Daystate, brocock compatto/bantam, Ataman

Ones that won't work using above scenario = Benjamin, FX bobcat, impact royals etc, Vulcan, RAW - the RAW and Bobcats are easy to quickly single load.

My magazine is easy to modify or increase spring tension if needed, so I keep mine loaded without any worries (marauder)...it's not comparable to a hammer spring being left cocked imo...in that event the spring is under max or near max or even 50%+ preload for extended period where as the spring in magazines is likely under very little tension when left loaded (in comparison) and the hammer spring becoming weak as a much bigger problem for the rifle than the magazine spring becoming slightly weaker.

The primary reason for many people loading almost full mags in pb, whether they knew it or not, was due the the feed lips. There were some sparatic instances of failures due to feed lips that opened, though I doubt the cause. Loading airguns mags, based on the very few technologies I have seen used, to the maximum will bring no problems in the long run. Based on what I consider to be a lot of knowledge, I will say that I have many mags both pb and ag loaded and I don't fear failures at all on either.

With the marauder I couldn't care less. It's a $15 mag, I have always left them fully loaded ready to go. Things change when it's a $80 impact mag, big difference in price. I have 3 .22 mags and I have left them all topped off ready to go. Never failed so far and I don't think they will fail. Doesn't seem like the tension has gotten any softer. Thanks for you input guys!
