Tips & Tricks…Emergency Kit in the field

Good afternoon everyone, and we’ve had some discussions indirectly about what people take to the field. So I thought why not have one string where we share our

  1. Who takes a emergency / survival kit into the field?
  2. What do you include in your kit?
  3. Do you include a repair kit in your emergency / survival kit, if needed, for your gun (aka field stripping repairs)?
  4. Have you taken first aid/cpr (if not why?) :D?
  5. Have you taken any wilderness survival courses?
    [/LIST=1]

I thought this might be good knowledge to share with some newbies to field hunting, and everyone. Maybe there is something valuable to be shared that even seasoned professional hasn’t thought of to include in their kit.

For me, I almost always carry a first aid kit with me whether in the car, traveling on a plane, out for all day (reasons for a murse). Trust me, this has come into use more than once on me or others.

Jim Chapman did a series on prepping / preparing for the season which I found very useful: https://youtu.be/iN6D7T4_Mfs

I include a lot of what Jim does, and I thought good to share.

I have taken First Aid and CPR well over a dozen times, about every 2 years, in fact I need to take it again. I have taken some winter survival training and avalanche safety courses from Idaho State University, which are offered to non-students and very reasonably priced. https://www.isu.edu/outdoor/ If you can take an actual in person course, DO, don’t rely on a book. The more training you can get the better. And yes, some form depending on the terms and conditions of additional personal protection.

Not a issue here as i dont go to the field with a gun at least, but i do with big knifes ASO now that wolves have come Back to Denmark.

Anyway i am a old SOB so the chance of nicking myself are always there, so i have contemplated a small MED kit for a while, but just never gotten around to do it.

SO i am all ears here.

I am proficient in regular and advanced first aid, and firefighting and smoke diving too though thats probably not going to be needed, these skills have not been refreshed in a while as i no longer work in a job where that is needed, i do miss not least the biannual firefighter brush up courses.

I have also a few times as i kid / teen put a needle and thread in myself as my wounds would have raised questions at the hospital, and there was a time questions asked was not my thing.

Hehe TP is a good thing to have at hand, though in Denmark, you are usually not really "out there" no matter where you go, but i have squatted a few times in nature. But some form of toilet are usually not far away, but TP might be missing as i think some use it for kindling ( amateurs )

I bring what can be in a small rucksack and strapped to it, knife ( normally on the belt but some i carry under the shoulder CC ) - band saw - para chord - fire starter and other essential knickknacks, and of course sodas, i dont really drink pure water, and it is very few places you can actually find running drinkable water, so if you go that way you do need some kind of filtration or at least boiling of the water.

O And MEAT !!!! lots of meat to grill, eating are almost the only good reason to go camping.

I am first aid / cpr certified. Doesn’t matter if I’m going to work, hiking or hunting. I always carry a minimal blowout kit, basic first aid separate. Source of light, fire and warmth like a sos blanket. As far as a survival kit pretty basic as in my area there isn’t really a deep dark wood but breaking an ankle is very likely so I carry a whistle and a emergency ration bar.
never been so far out my cell doesn’t work but having to hold up for several hours may suck.

I don’t carry a repair kit for air guns I really don’t want to do a tear down on a tree stump. I’ll just call it a day.
I always carry enough gear to cover the person with me so 2 blankes if need be and extra food and water. I will some times a carry a tarp if I know bad weather is possible allows me to say out longer with a rain cover. As far as training I was set to do a local CERT but covid stopped all classes. I haven’t checked lately.
I am a huge supporter of CPR at a minimum. Seen it used on job sites and my wife used it on our son to save his life. All in all I know of 5 instances cpr saved a life personally and 2 times first aid saved a life. Just remember all bleeding will stop. It’s up to you how fast.

I also nurture a flashlight addiction, so i am also over on "that flashlight forum"

Thats what make my nights in the forest a pleasure, though when you suddenly stand face 2 face with a wolf, you do appreciate you have that way overkill flashlight at hand and a flash of its instant daylight mode can send a wolf running :) But after that day i must admit i carry a big old knife too, and i would carry a gun too if my country wasent so horrible bad on that issue.

I dont carry a lighter after i stopped smoked this and that 10 years ago, but putting one in my backpack i have contemplated several times too, but also on that no follow thru.

But my favorite lighter have always been Dunhill Rollalight lighters, after a case of those fell of a truck passing me when i was a young snot faced punk,,,,,,, okay i also like the traditional Ronson and of course the zippo, i mean come on, they are classics. I do also carry a pocket knife though it is illegal as it is a frame lock and 1 hand open, on blade length i think it is cool after the extremely silly knife law from over a decade ago was reworked.
