Three Porker Rats... after work today.

I went down to the dairy around 6:30 pm to see what I might see. Lots of starlings, but they were in a field where a road was the background so I couldn’t shoot. So I headed indoors to try my luck with the rats. These three fatties obliged me. Two at 25 yards the third at 30 yards. All were DRT kills, the biggest rat, the first I shot, got two servings of the JSB 18s. It was peeking out of its hole when I anchored it with the first shot, DRT, I took the second shot just in case.

Mr. L.Leon,

Excellent marksmanship, nice BroCock and good pictures. I take it those rats came out in daylight, or did you use that light mounted to the scope?

I only see rats here in my woodsheds at night. I have had good success with an ATN X - Sight scope and illuminator, a very heavy combination requiring me to use an adjustable tripod for support. I did experiment with a red or a green LED light mounted to my regular scope, poor results scanning around with the light moving. I then put the LED lamp on a rigid mount in flood mode and got much better results. Both colors of LED worked the same, but I preferred the red. Over all the ATN X-Sight works best, showing the glowing rat eyes.

I am sure the dairy owner appreciates your highly skilled work removing those jumbo size rats!!!

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Thank you gentlemen for the kind replies. I'm starting to feel sorry for the rats, once the crosshairs go on them (sub 50 yards) they're toast. I plink chewed up black walnut husks and small chalk pieces out to 64 yards, sometimes further. So those rats didn't stand a chance.

@arrowhead1951, thanks! I shot those three in daylight, the light is for dark recesses and corners in the building. I did not use the red light yesterday, but have to great effect. Many, many rats would testify if they could.

@l.Leon I might ask to buy back my Compatto sniper XR from my friend for a farm pesting gun. Though, I still would like something a bit shorter than the Compatto for inside work. The 25 Cal Taipan is very powerful sun 65-70 yards. Also I expect the coming RTI Prophet Performance Compact will be good out to 100 yards easy, but the Taipan and Prophet are not such good inside guns with their power limits.

The nice thing about the 177 Compatto is that with 3 clicks you can go from 18 ft/lbs to sub 12 ft/lbs with 177 Hades.

However, if I do get the Compatto that damn FX scope is going in on the market block. It’s no where near worth the money Krale said it was.
