Took a long time and surprised myself that the R9 was the last of the Beeman R series I added to my collection.
My first R9 was a used .22 cal. it had a bit of a twang so in went a Macarri kit and seal. While apart internals got the normal debur, polish, relube and trigger work that I give all my springers. The scope I choose is a Hawke AirMax SF 30 4-12x50. The stock has some very nice grain and a good silicone cloth wipe down really shows it off. This one seems to do well with H&N FTT 5.53 but I have not shot it a lot so there might be something better yet to come.
Next I added a used .177 cal. which shot really nicely but again I opened it up to see what things looked like inside. The same polish & lube, etc. was done which made things even better still. Accuracy, performance and handling was very nice so I decided to enhance things a bit. I added an adjustable recoil pad, barrel sleeve and made my own rosewood and brass pistol grip cap. This stock also has some really nice grain to it. I put a Discovery HI 5-20x50 in it but the hash marks are a bit small for me so I may change it out at some point. It seemed to really like the CP brown box 7.9gr but since they are longer made I am testing other pellets.
I thought since the .22 & .177 handled and performed well I would try a .20 cal. if I could find a nice used one. I am really not a fan of the .20 overall and own very few. The ones I have are only because they are rare models that only came in .20 cal. I found a nice used one and did my usual inspection before firing. I noticed a very smooth cocking stroke and good spring tension. Upon firing I did notice a very slight twang and before too many shots went through it I opened it up to find the piston had been glided and there was an aftermarket spring kit too! With the spring kit I was very surprised to have the gun still twang and even some Macarri tar would not stop it. Ultimately the .20 is performing really well and after swapping spring kits from the .22 to the .20 the twang is gone. I put a barrel sleeve and an R11 stock on it then later found a custom Paul Bishop thumbhole stock that I will be using for the foreseeable future.
