Thoughts on buying used?

I definitely love to tinker. It makes me kind of nervous when my first has issues out of the box without modding though. I also think the odds of them already addressing it is higher when buying used too which is making me think I should almost just return
Airgus are great if you like to tinker, it's a big part of what I like about them.

I've found that the biggest improvement in airgun accuracy is achieved by the consistency of the shooter 🙂

I did not. Rookie mistake but I was checking out late bc the had a sale that was ending and I forgot to add it. I also just didn’t think it was that likely I’d get an issue out of the box tbh
Its a must with any of the less than $500 airguns.
They usually don't use o-ring dressing during assembly causing nicks or other sealing problems, that are easy to fix.

But by at very least by taking advantage of the basic function check & pressure checks you have a better chance out the box.

Too often people just want to save a buck, trust me I get it, but then the jump online or on social talking about the gun sucks or customer service is crap (note not directed at OP).

You live and learn

Also most of my airguns I bought used so that I know they function, but nowadays I see too many people strictly out to make profits instead of like the scene was say 15 years ago when you could find guns that people want to pass along, and even find deals.

I’ve seen some really good deals there. All are above what I had intended on spending by at this time but you never know. Right now I gotta get to my 10 days here as a start 😂
i’ve bought and sold over 25 airguns on AGN. The only problems that I’ve experienced are when a seller fails to double box AND prevent contents from shifting. I’ve also bought numerous airguns from AOA and Utah and Pyramid and the Pellet shop - same thing happens with retailers who fail to box and protect items properly - damage! But the big box stores make it much easier to correct the problem.
I only buy used from reputable AGN members after reviewing their feedback profile. I’ve gotten some amazing deals buying used. But sometimes I send that “used” airgun directly into a maintenance depot for a reseal or upgrades. I only buy and sell scopes that have lifetime warranties like from Athlon or Sightron so if there’s a problem - they fix it straight away.

If you have "the knack" and you're good with machines... Used. Somebody else may give up and sell a gun with a simple problem you can easily fix at a discount. If you'd return a gun for a oring leak, buy new.
Pretty sure I wouldn't buy a used gun that would require a machine to fix. I could see an oring here or a spring there but that's about as deep as I'd be willing to go.

Here's a confidence builder. I blew 2200 on a new impact (I'm not made out of money, it took 2 years to save) and I still cracked it open immediately.😁

Don't ever buy an aea then. That's when I had to buy a mini lathe for my first week with the gun.

To elaborate, I wasn't sending it back because of the problems I was having that year with FedEx and the gun was bought new and just started breaking itself with normal use, so I made all my own parts and even sold some here. I have never had a used gun require machined parts, yet. This is also why I'm not bothering with mediocre budget guns that look too good to be true( not knocking anyone's beloved brands). It's low consequence, dead cheap crosman stuff, or premium gear for me going forward.

I have bought quite a few over the last few years. Most were long out of production , and some needed some resealing, new springs, but I took that into account. Sellers were upfront with condition. I had one what could have been a bad experience, with a Daisy 747 SSP pistol from ebay. Picture shown and description showed a good gun with intact rear sight. THe one I got had a broken sight, and ebay made the seller take it back and refund my money. A replacement sight was not available. I suspect this year I am into a couple of thousand dollars with 3 used guns, a FWB 602 Meistergrade and two FWB 150's
Some were bought from members here others from folks on Gateway to Airguns and a few on ebay. I always look at ratings of the seller.
Likewise I have ordered parts/accessories. mostly Anschutz diopter sights from dealer in Eastern Europe and never a problem there either.

Never a problem with AOA or Pyramid packaging. I was lucky with couple of nice HW rifles from Krale in the Netherlands. Factory box thrown into a larger box and no padding to keep it from bouncing around.

When you say maintenance depot? Is this like one of the retailers like pyramid or utah?

I don’t think they actually do any of that, plenty have attested to that, it couldn’t have been done after receiving a broken rifle.
All the times I have bought guns from them they included a certificate stating that it was done, guns all worked properly and held pressure, so I am going to believe them versus some random posts online.
It's not to say that even after the inspection is done, the gun can't depressurize or not function correctly, but very least when you call customer service the phone call goes different, because they checked it prior to shipping

Airgun ING is a hobby that includes working on the guns. If you don't then it'll cost a lot more. A pcp will need work sooner or later.
I've bought tons of used guns, not much to complain about. You get the dork every once in a while that doesn't quite reveal the problems he's had, and that's annoying, but usually fixable. Most guys are up front and honest and a real pleasure to deal with. That's the cool part of buying sell ng and trading.

All of the pcp rifles I have now are used, that speaks volumes.

I look at it as those with the drive and technical horsepower will reap the discount benefits of those who do not. Unfortunately premium guns that have suffered "the golden screwdriver" are often sold for near retail. There are tell tale signs. "witness marks" on fasteners is a sign to keep your eyes peeled for issues. Stickers too. Especially stickers on bottles.

Hi NotSure2020 - my pennies worth of whether to buy used or to purchase new; to me it really boils down to how mechanically inclined you, the kind of equipment/machinery is readily available to you, the degree of repair or mods you are wanting to implement, and oh yes - how much time you have. For me, the last one has always been a challenge, because though I enjoy working on airguns and the like, sometimes I wonder if its worth the effort? Wouldn't I rather spend the little time I have shooting them instead of working on them?
