This upsets me because it is not helpful

It is when someone asks about wanting to get a air gun that fits their budget. They state that,ok?
Then we get someone or a couple of people saying get so and so airgun because it's worth spending a lot more money for. Guess what? You just did that person a disservice. They told you they had a budget. It's not up to you to tell them they should spend $1000 over their budget. You do not know why they have a budget. I think these people who are saying to get an airgun outside the budget are just bragging on what they have,, or cannot read.
Another thing I see...a person will post all the information needed in their post and someone will ask a question that is Already stated,Like read the post ,that information is already in there ok I know that we all skim at times.
Thank you for your thoughts ,I am always willing to listen.

my problem is when someone tells a newbie they must have a .25 cal and at least 30 FPE to shoot small game at over 35 or 40 yards .
PS well said boscoebrey

I do understand the thought behind your post. However, I don’t necessarily see it as “bragging” to recommend that a new member at least explore outside their budget. Someone new to our hobby may state a given budget, but due to their inexperience may not even know what is available just beyond. Let’s say that you‘re a new member with little experience. You state that you’d like to spend $300 on a spring piston gun. The suggestions come in for a Gamo XXX model for only $289.99. Wouldn’t you at least like to know that for about $50-$75 more you would be in the HW30 or HW50 territory? It’s a small step up in budget for a vastly better rifle that they may not even have known about. If I were that newbie I’d appreciate the extra information. Just another point of view. Thanks for your post.

What good is it to tell someone that is on a budget to buy a disposable pcp that will be unusable in a few years? Had they spent a little more they could be enjoying a pcp for many many years down the road. This is a very expensive hobby, the industry doesnt care some people cant afford xyz. When I had no money I absolutely hated the idea of trying to save a few bucks to buy some garbage product that would let me down. You say it is a disservice, but many of us dont see it that way. I learned long ago from experience that often when you buy the cheap option you end up spending more money in the end.

yes if their budget is ?? $300 suggesting a small increase for a better gun would be justified . but Buy once Cry once 1k more is ludicrous . In another conversation earlier i mentioned i meet a lot of people that have no idea their are other air guns except those sold in the Big Box stores .

That’s because people who are telling them to spend more money work for the airgun manufacturers.😂

Well after reading some of these replies I can see some people are still not getting it.
I can agree with the thoughts of introducing people to newer better air rifles that cost more.
That should be introduced as a question Not an answer.Answer their question, who are you to think they do not know about better higher priced air guns?
So then I can agree what you are saying, but I think that is a different subject .
Again ask it ,like if you can afford a little more or have you thought of.....Do not ever tell anyone what they should get =outside what they are asking.
Assumptions are your personal opinion, not facts,if needed then get more facts to help you help them (y)

I don’t even click on those threads anymore. They have become my least favorite by far. In my opinion they are fruitless. Just a thread full of 50 different suggestions that probably confuse more than it helps. People need to research themselves, narrow it down to a couple and then ask specific questions about those specific guns instead of the what gun should I buy question.

I'm frequently asked to recommend a product (gun, fishing gear, tools etc) because I have a reputation for doing a lot of research and making informed purchases.

The first thing I do is find out what the person wants the product for, the level of intrest/buy-in/budget and future considerations. If I can help, I do. If not, I say so.

The biggest concern I see is that the well meaning people offering "help" are bombarding the OP with suggestions for their favorite brand/model/caliber with even if it doesn't match what the guy was asking about.

The OP was probably overwhelmed with all the options before asking for help. After asking he is likely more confused and tries to select by popular vote rather than something the meets his needs.

All I'm saying is that we should identify/determine the requirements and make suggestions accordingly. Personal preferences may or may not apply. Hype and fear mongering should be minimized. 😉

Cheers!

There are many more decent shooting, relatively inexpensive, introductory airguns available now than there were 5 years ago. Someone with a tight budget (like me) can have an educational & satisfactory introduction to PCP's & really get a feel for what they're about. Yeah, it bugs me too with all the "buy once cry once" responses & don't buy "junk" advice. Your junk might have taken someone a year or 2 to save for. I'd rather see someone have an acceptably accurate & functioning pcp in the less expensive range (like what I shot & learned on) than be turned away by advice they specifically didn't ask for! Even though I had junk i had a blast & learned really important things that are applicable no matter WHAT I'm shooting. If you want to help people, help within THEIR parameters, not yours! Totally with you on this "Boscoe"
