Thinking about purchasing this oil water separator....is it a good option? is there a better value i should consider?

Hello, just trying to secure the majority of what i will need as I should soon be receiving my first air rifle. I'm not trying to disparage any company in this effort.

I will be receiving in addition to the 30 caliber gauntlet 2 rifle some projectiles and an air compressor and a dear friend made me a safe stop target holder.

I am considering this oil water separator (posted below). It has generally favorable reviews on Amazon...but honestly I know so little about this topic and I would imagine that sometimes the reviews might be biased. That said, the company Gx is known to me from their compressors and several posts on this forum.

The product is called Professional-Grade High Pressure PCP Air Compressor Filter with Pressure Maintaining Function- 5800PSI Oil/Water Separator, Magnetic or Screw Mounting,Dry Air Intake Filter for Paintball
Here's the link on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DX73QM4P/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_5?smid=A27SLSMOK7EK4X&psc=1

Not sure if it's a good value, it's a lot of money but i want to be safe an do the right thing..... or should i be considering something else? Specific product recommendations would sure be helpful.

Also, can one replace the components for the filters such as the beads etc. or are the internals propietary? It wasn't evident to me from the listing.

thank you for your help.

They are great filters. Extremely well built. Very heavy duty construction. Yes, you can replace the filter contents. You actually get a second replacement with the filter. When you get your hands on one you’ll see what I mean about how well built and heavy duty this thing is. I run one on my GX E L3 compressor. I know they sell out really quick , so if you can get one, grab it.

I have that same filter, I bought mine direct from GX Pump, got free shipping and no tax charges. I see Amazon has a $10 off coupon, so it may be cheaper going through Amazon.

The filter is working very well for me and works with the higher pressure my GX Pump CS-4 produces.

First, you did not mention what type of compressor you are going to be using this with. That matters, in that the flow rate out of the compressor has a bearing on what kind of "filter" works best. For example, a cyclonic separator (or the dual units that use a cyclonic seperator before a media filter) don't do much if the flow rate is low. That said, the GX filter appears to be a great unit so far and should pair well with pretty much any compressor.

Second, you referred to this filter as being "a lot of money" but the reality in this game is that it really is not a lot of money (leaving personal economics aside) - PCPs can be a rather expensive hobby, and not protecting the assets in it with quality air is where it can get really expensive. The cost of the filter is far less than a replacement gun for one that gets ruined from internal water corrosion . . .

...that really help. i very much appreciate the information. i don't want to be "penny wise and pound foolish" but things are difficult/challenging for us now since life threw us a bit of a curve. Just trying to make realistic and judicious choices.

when someone like myself ,who has no experience with these products, looks at these devices they appear so simple to design and build.....and yet prices are all over the place.

i'm not certain which compressor i'm to receive, i purchases the air rifle and compressor from a very nice person who is trusted on this forum.

i value the experience and counsel of the forum....thank you all

if there's anything else i should consider i'd sure appreciate the input.

I like the dual type
1st stage gets most of the water and oil
2nd stage dries the air completely

What i also like is that there are 2 release cocks. The primary water one is important as that drains the water that the first filter extracted. The 2nd is primarily for draining the air.

I use the primary cock as the pressure release as that also back flows the secondary (dessicant and charcoal). Don't know if that is good thing it just seems like it was not a bad thing.
