The wait is almost over...

Hi guys:

Marcella and Imold, my suggestion is that you ask Sandra to install also the sling studs in factory... laminated woods are a little bit difficult to drill without causing some unwanted damage.
Live you some pics of the euro accessory rail installed in my HM and the other accessories that come with it.

Regards.

José Palma

I'm glad you finally decided on the details of your order! One thing: The model you want is "RAW HMx .357 (130 ft-lbf regulated)." It is "up to 160 ft-lbf" only if she is unregulated. You don't want to confuse Sandra ;-).

Damn, you're going full Monte! You go, boi!! Do you want thumbhole? You better specify, son!

I did talk to Sandra yesterday and amended my order to include the forestock Euro Rail and Picatinny Rail conversion kit. Thanks buddy for the heads-up on that :). I got it in under the wire thanks to you. She said it will not delay shipment. Jeesh, that's all I need at this point!

José, thank you so much for those pics! They are extremely helpfull to me. I now understand fully how the forestock Euro Rail and Picatinny Rail conversion kit system works. It should also beef-up the forestock portion under the bottle. I was a little concerned about the potentially fragile nature of that sliver of laminate.

I do not use a shoulder sling, so the sling stud is not necessary. (I really gotta cool my jets on all the accessories!) I use this set-up: https://www.magpul.com/products/firearms-accessories/slings-and-sling-mounts/ms3-sling-gen2 http://www.eberlestock.com/store/gunslinger-ii (It's what the U.S. Navy SEALs use!)

At any rate, I'm so glad I "met" you, José :)

The RAW is considerably beefier than a Royale or Wolverine in the bottle area. The gun is considerably beefier/heavier in every area than other rifles. My .25 RAW is also louder than my Impact .25 which surprises me.

Ya I forgot to put thumbhole in and it should of been 130 reg just a lot on my mind trying to figure it all out plus I was looking forward to receiving my AV Compressor and plus my UTG 4-16x44 showed up for my BullBoss and I went to town and had Nick put that Vortex in back for me plus he ordered the Atlas Bipod for me so now I think I can sit back and relax for a bit.

Glad you got it figured out and that it's not delaying your HMx....

Good, as long as Sandra has all the right details. I've never bought a custom-made gun before with so many options; it's caused me a fair amount of grief. I just wanted to give you a heads-up so you avoid the pitfalls into which I've fallen!

How is your new compressor? I bet you spent the last hour getting her all set up. Your new UTG sounds pretty snazzy, as well! I love back-order stuff, too; especially the day it's due :)

No problem glad I thought enough to mention it, I've seen that euro mount on other rifles and always thought it was just a different mounting system for the expensive bipods and rifles didn't realize that was the norm in Europe. I like how it works being that if you do not want to have a Bipod or say a light/laser you can remove said item and have a smooth front forearm for bags or adjustable bench rest like I have for LRT with my 6.5 Creedmoor, I use The Caldwell Rock BR competition front shooting rest! I took it out to my new range so I have it out there with my other bench rest stuff, need to keep everything in one spot or else I start loosing things hahaha..
I think I got my soon to order HMx figured out so now it's just up to me to decide when to make that all important phone call, I might wait till yours comes in so I can read what you have to say being its only a couple weeks away.
Did you order any extra mags with yours?at 75 bucks a pop it's not cheep but neither are these rifles, I mean order 2 extra mags and its another 150 bucks on top of the other add on's a guy wants, I might as well plan on 2500 for this rifle in all reality and that could be low after all the scope is a tad under 600 and the Bipod is about 270 so things add up....
Anyway now it's time to sit back and enjoy.....

I think it's wise for you to wait until I get my RAW to see what's actually what. By all accounts, I should receive her no later than the 24th of this month! Sandra told me that Martin built my baby yesterday and will be test firing her later this week. Then she will sit for a week to check for leaks. He needs to install the Euro Rail and then she's ready to ship! UPS four-day ground and she's mine! I'm all prepared to put her through her paces and of course I will post the results. The timing couldn't be worse though because I'm sitting for the California State Bar Exam on the 25th & 26th!

As Rosanne Rosannadanna said:

I'm a fan of the Euro Rail system. I too was not aware of it. My Impact had an integral Picatinny slice on what passes for a forestock and I always found it to interfere with my shooting stick. I couldn't get a stable seating and the rail chewed up my stick. And I didn't want to put pressure on the bottle; I was already experiencing enough leaking. The way Sandra explained it to me, the Euro Rail is very versatile in that a variety of accessories can simply be slid into it and secured using a set screw. And like you said, it can simply be kept empty to provide a smooth forestock. This is also why I resist having a shoulder sling stud installed in the butt. I want to keep that area smooth as well for rifle rests 'n such. Besides, I use a Magpul MS3 Sling system. I find it allows more efficient and smooth shouldering of the rifle in the field (http://www.cabelas.com/product/MAGPUL-MS-SLING/1783053.uts).

Yes, I did order an extra mag. And get this: Martin is running a promo on new gun purchases; buy a spare mag, get one free! I'd definitely inquire about that. God, I can't wait 'til I get her! They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it's just making me feel a little anxious!

Matt, thank you so much for the gorgeous hi-def pics! So, that's the official term: "Anschutz" rail. I was wondering about the positioning of the accessories; one can simply slide them back & forth to get the position desired. That IS awesome! I know I keep mentioning this ad nauseam, but I'm so glad that Imold gave me a heads-up on the Anschutz before my RAW shipped :). The folks I have met on AGN have added inestimable value to my airgun experience. I'm so glad that Ted and Michael have established such a wonderful forum.

Your rifle is gorgeous; what is that? Man, these custom airguns are truly works of art. What kind of moderator is on there? I am somewhat concerned with the noise level of my new RAW .357; I hope it will be manageable. I'm strictly a field shooter, so she doesn't have to be backyard friendly; but I am concerned about spooking game. The stealth factor is the main reason I use air rifles for hunting.

And I do know about the Powder thing hahaha, just ordered more pellets for the 25 and 357, now that I have a unlimited supply of compressed air I need to get a almost unlimited supply of ammo.
It's going to be interesting to see what grain of hunting pellet will best be suited for the HMx, I'm thinking something in the 95 to 120 grain area, there are some pellets in the 358 diameter that I wonder if they will work in the HMx or does a person need to stay 357 with the mag, guess I didn't pay attention if there was a single loading tray available for the HMx or if the mag will except a 358 hmmmmmm.

Imold, you should be aware that the RAW HMx .357 (130 ft-lbf regulated) is specifically tuned to perform best with the JSB 81.02 gr pellet. You can experiment with other pellets, but I sincerely doubt that you'll get tighter groups at 100 yards than with the JSB 80s. Of course there are other considerations re what pellet to use than solely long-range accuracy, especially for hunting. I'm not a particular fan of JSBs for hunting. The domed design tends to dump most of the ballistic energy in the backdrop instead of the game. (Although there's a strong argument to be made that w/ a .357, that really doesn't matter! If a small- to medium-size animal gets hit with a .357 cal. round per se traveling at 850 fps, it's gonna have a bad day at Black Rock!)

I have had good success with my FX Impact .30 shooting tip-less Predator Polymags as a hunting round. The Impact .30 mag, as well as the RAW .357 mag, will not accommodate Polymags w/ the tips on. The nice thing about the RAW, as opposed to the Impact, is that pellets can be single loaded w/ the RAW. And yes, there is a single-loading tray available for the RAW .357 (https://www.rapidairweapons.com/xcart/product.php?productid=17711&cat=267&page=1). But, I have actually achieved a better BC with the tip-less Polymags than with the JSBs! Go figure. And the stopping power of the Polymags are ree-donkulous! I virtually always recover the Polymags from game. The wound channel is devastating. I have NEVER recovered a JSB (except from the fence post behind the animal!)

Having said all that, it is a lot of fun mixin' 'n matchin' different combos of pellets and settings. It is a big part of the enjoyment I get out of airguns, actually. I even had Robert Vogel AKA Mr. Hollowpoint (http://www.mrhollowpoint.com/index.html) whip me up a party pak of different styles and weights of cast .357 cal. hollowpoint bullets to try in my new RAW. But, I don't hold out much hope that I'll get sufficiently tight groups beyond 50 yards. The classic bullet design does not fare well stability-wise at subsonic velocities and relatively low barrel twist rates. This is why airgun pellets are of the diabolo design. The shuttlecock profile stabilizes projectiles in subsonic flight. But, the search continues for the optimal air rifle hunting round!

I'm so glad you decided to go with the RAW HMx .357 (130 ft-lbf regulated) thumbhole stock w/ the adjustable cheek piece (and let's not forget the Anschutz rail!) Now I'll have someone with whom to truly commiserate :)
