The S510 just landed. This gun is un. believable. (OK, honeymooning a bit)

Depends on the back yard. Yours? Yes. Mine? No, if the neighbors are out and about. I definitely can't shoot more than a shot or two without folks thinking: "what was that?!"

I Need to find an inexpensive moderator for it; make sure this baby is at least 4' long. :-\ It doesn't need a fancy one, since it's already shrouded. But the shroud is not big enough to be effective enough at FAC (British FireArm Certificate, < 12 FPE) power levels.

When I had the Marauder, I never realized what a good job they did on the shroud, compared to everyone else. No other non-custom gun I've shot is as quiet, without an extra moderator.

"Ginuwine1969"If you keep the power 3 or less and its really quiet. 13.4 JSB, 14, and 16 grain JSB all work great at both slow and fast speed.s
I need to have my son shoot it with me (kind of) downrange, so I can really hear what it sounds like to others. I could hear the high-pitched crack echoing off of the neighbors' houses. That was on power levels 4 and 5.

It's a funny thing with airgun reports; they sound completely different, depending on one's point of view.

"ddransoml"@Ginuwine1969...I have the s510 Ultimate Spotter with the Q-tech moderator...your's is just shrouded correct? Do you know why they stopped making the latter model?
Correct.

Not sure what you mean by the 'latter model.'

I'm not sure if you're in the US, but US law on external silencers is ambiguous, and the most common interpretation is that any silencer must be permanently attached from the retailer or factory. It might be fear of litigation leading to butt-covering.

"Smaug"Here are some pix of my S510 rig. Nothing fancy, just iPhone pix.

Overall:

Action, left side:

Action, right side. Looks kind of cobbled-together, doesn't it?

Not sure how I feel about this honey-colored butt cap on the olive drab wood:

Glossy air tube under a matte shroud? Questionable design call. Matte everywhere would make more sense on a 'hunter' version.

The action works well. Once in awhile, it won't feed a pellet. I'm not sure if that is because of the pellet being damaged or some design in the mag. But I have to remove the mag, reinsert it, and try again, and that clears it.

The shroud's not as quiet as I thought it would be. It's not Marauder-quiet, and not Compatto+Huggett-quiet either. It's even a bit louder than my HPA Hammerli 850, which has the Hammerli air stripper, with shrink wrap on it. (works amazingly well...) It's not objectionable, but it has a high-pitched crack to it on medium and high power settings.
Congrats Smaug! I really enjoy my S410-SL!

As far as the mag issue, I had the same problem. What I found was, the indexing finger wasn't aligned flush to the groove in the magazine. I discovered this by dry firing and watching it index and noticed only part of the finger was fitting into the groove. I simply adjusted the finger with my leatherman... and gently bent it so it fit flush in the mag. Problem Solved... zero misalignments since!

Good luck with your new rifle!

"Willie14228"As much as I like not having to worry about scratching up a synthetic there is just something about having real wood in your hands that makes it so tempting thats nice looking rig smaug
That's why I got the cheap wood! :-D I have the warm feeling of wood, but I'm not always thinking of how it came at a $150 premium.

No, that's not really why. But it is a nice side benefit, eh?

@Smaug
That's a nice air rifle. I love the S510 action. I don't have the .22 but do have the .177 Ultimate Sporter, which has the same action and barrel. Mine's preferred pellets are Air Arms made by JSB even over essentially the same JSB pellet. That may hold true for the .22. If you come across an Air Arms Q- tech moderator I highly recommend it. The .177 produces 24 fpe, and makes a Marauder sound very loud with the Q-tech. I found that turning the power wheel just past half way gave me a good shot count, accuracy to 50 yards and power 900 fps with AA 10.34g Heavy. Hopefully you'll get some good weather soon to find your gun's ideal pellet and power setting.

"kevmck1"John_in_MA - I'm relatively new to the sport of field target, what is the wire tie at the end of the barrel for?
I'll be curious to hear the answer to that too. I'm guessing for gauging wind.
It is for guagng wind direction, and with enough practice how much to hold off depending on how much the indicators moves. In the last picture you can see a black spot under the shroud. That is the flag that is attached to the zip tie with 4lb braided fishing line, a small fishing swivel.

Oh, and the Ultimate Sporter stock is great, but those are her work clothes. This is her party gown:

smaug... I think yr gun mabe even more accurate than you think it is. I think with proper barrel cleaning and the right pellet. and proper tecnic yr groups will shrink big time.
my s510 is more accurate and consistant than my daystate airwolf.

with my s510 I'm getting groups of 3 mm ctc at 28 yards and groups of 8mm ctc and 13 mm ctc.
this is with unweiged and in sorted. straight from the tin
