Good shot. At first glance it looks like a cottonmouth. But the head is the giveaway. But I would have shot it as well. My wife and kids don’t know the difference and like you not taking the chance. Plus it’s just a snake and I’m sure they’re are plenty waiting to take it’s place.Â
@Backstop, I believe you missed my reply on March 14th giving my apology for misidentifying the snake. I completely agree with you. I was wrong.
(Replay from March 14th: "Thank you all. After some needed research on my part, I completely agree that this is not a Cottonmouth after all. Although it bears a strong resemblance to the Cottonmouth especially in body type and no banding on the belly side, it appears to be a non-venomous Diamondback water snake by its round eyes and non-viper head. I live in Mississippi where the Cottonmouth is very common, and I bet mistakes are made quite frequently. This snake measured 59" with an 8" diameter. Unfortunately for this snake, I have four daughters who like to sit on our dock, and I was not willing to take a chance that this giant snake was safe.Â
Thank you for educating me.
Mark" end of reply)
Now, if you don't mind, would you examine my picture of what I identified as Copperheads and let me know if I was wrong about them also.
Good Lord that's a big sucker! Man I hate snakes. Out in the fields I don't bother with them unless there poisonous. But if that was near my house where my baby girl plays I don't care poisonous or not it's going to be taken out.Â
