The Proof is in the Pop

In my experience, domes make the same satisfying thwock sound.

This.

But, the interesting part is I haven't heard it with my d48, and I do on my sig. They are both above 18 FPE at the muzzle, so it's not that. I started thinking it was related to the shot cycle. The d48 has a much longer shot cycle so I started thinking that was overlapping the thwack.....not sure I have a good explanation for that one...

Interesting! Maybe it’s more to do with weight/FPE than pellet/slug shape

My .177 barracuda in my asp give me the thwack, the .22 diabolos in my d48 do not....??

It may have to do with the hardness of the lead. The JSB pellets use a harder mix of tin/lead than do Polymags and NSA slugs.

I am very interested in the lead hardness of the different projectiles we shoot.

Have you done any hardness testing, o did a manufacturer email you any information about it?

When I lived in the suburb I would often use pointed pellets as the dome pellets hitting the starlings and sparrows made more noise than the rifle. At low velocity, I was using a Sharp Ace at the time with only three pumps, the pointed pellets were very quiet and deadly. Now living in the country I love the sound the pellet makes hitting the starlings and squirrels.

This one sounded like a balloon popped. Airforce Condor SS .25cal NSA 26.8 gr 53 fpe at 54yards according to ballistics calculator instant death. Not a great shot but got the job done.

Wow! What a shot! Were you not aiming for the neck? That exit wound is nasty. Looks like you got some great expansion hence the "POP!!" Neck shots toward the vertebrae tend to dispatch them rather quickly.
