FX The outrageous cost of High quality airguns WOW

I just got into kites a few months ago. Yes, kites that kids fly. I thought "an innocent and cheap hobby". Now, I'm spending $100 and $200 on "beginner" kites.
Year ! how about that 1200 feet of 160 Test pound braided Flight line ? to fly the $350 Kite

Expensive? The new tariff taxes are beginning to kick in....our air guns are in the far majority foreign made. Hang on!
Maybe this will cause some American companies to actually manufacture some stuff rather than private-labelling foreign made products (Part of the purpose of the tariffs besides leveling the playing field!)

Good discussion. There are a number of used top tier Airguns on the classifieds for decent prices, yet they don’t sell. That’s hard to comprehend.
Not really, the point about "the jones" plays in here. The Jones crew upgrade with each incrementally adjusted version. Then the previous version goes up for sale. The people that are willing to buy that previous version at a discount are a finite number. So those first used guns get snapped up and then the rest do not sell at that same price point. Those secondary sales would need to be a greater discount but the sellers believe that their pricing is correct. So they just keep renewing the classified.

Then there are the used buyers who put the 2 or 3 version back gun up at a significant discount. Undercutting sales of those guns even more. Look at how many versions of FX Impact are available in classifieds. Is there that great a difference between Mk1 and Mk4?

Nope, manufacturing infrastructure for the most part no longer exists. The cost and time to recreate would never make it through the Boards since they are beholden to Wall Street and the Quarterly reporting cycle.

I've owned all of the Impact versions. They all shoot equally well. Impacts now are around $2400. And what do you get? More knobs to fiddle with. The MK2 is much more simple, shoots as accurate and capable of just as much as the M4 but for $1200 less. That's a good piece of change. Once I get a gun to shoot the way I like, it stays that way. Some of these newbies bitching about prices should seriously consider the older versions. But we're talking FXs here. What about Air Arms, Daystates, Brococks? These have not gone through any, or very little, evolution and are still as worthy as new ones. These are still ignored.

Im so cheap my FX purchases have come in the last 18 months, Bobcat, Boss, Royale. Far as I'm concerned they were the peak FX and everything since is just a tweak.

I also have my 20+ year old British rifles that are still as good as anything made today. And esthetically superior to anything sold today. Some thing about a grade 2 walnut stock...

Shin Sung Career 707 is still a monster.

I just can't justify spending $2K plus for a pellet gun.

Ha! I could not get $1350 SHIPPED for my untouched Bronze M3 with an extra mag. They don't want to pay for new, they don't want to pay a fair price for used. Good. Don't buy anything. None of my 11 guns are going anywhere. They all shoot beautifully accurately and don't leak a bit of air. Buy chi-junk and start a forum to discuss them.

In today's market, the Impact 2 is a $1,000 shipped, and the M3 is a $1,200 gun shipped.

I am one that has been through A LOT of FX Airguns in my hobby journey and believe the same; FX has not improved. They have flooded the market with many models of Airguns. This has monopolized them as the “every man’s“ company looking for an airgun. Quick search online and boom! Suddenly you’re at Utah Airguns and your an owner of an Impact M4 or Wildcat and over your head.

I really like my Impact MK2, but it was far from perfect. I believe the M3 was a nice improvement and really enjoy it. I use my M3 compact all the time. MK2 often but not nearly as much. My Wildcat MK2 gets a ton of use and is a really great rifle. Newer Wildcats not nearly as good. Again a decline and cutting corners. The Impact M4 is just that for me IMHO just an impact MK2 for 2025. They don’t bother to fix the issue that plague the impacts designs. Regulator creep, first few shots inconsistencies, poor barrel design for POI and other issues, etc. I want more for my $2400.

If I am dropping 2-3k or more on an Airgun my expectations are that the barrel is inspected, rifling and twist rate are spot on for pellet and slugs that it’s supposed to shoot well, crown is nice, and the barrel is truly worthy of the price tag, the main rifle is well thought out for the end user for ease of tune-ability, access to O-rings and reseal, quality components and easily readable and accurate gauges. Regulates that do not have plastic in them, adjustable through a wide range and very accurate and consistent.

I love my M4 . A bit flawed yes it is and not 100% perfect . Is it worth 2400 $ . That is a matter of opinion ! I payed 2200 $ for mine and to be honest it was only worth 2100 $ . And that is my opinion ! Just dropped 2200 $ on more goodies . That is what I get a month in total income . I sell boy toys that I do not use anymore and buy new ones that I do use daily . Shure is dark down this Rabbit hole ! Only gets bright when I look through my Hawk scope on my 22 cal M4 at 150 yds and see the results. :sneaky:

Sometimes I think my life is basically a toy collection. RC airplanes since I was about age 4, shooting sports, photography which was both fun and my day job. I built a small block 350 Chevy in my kitchen one year because that’s what kitchens are for. I’ll likely never pick up a really high end air rifle other than an Anschutz I got used but I’m going to look at a Crosman 180 tomorrow because I really need to fill an empty spot in the gun cabinet.

What type of photography do you do? I’ve also been a full time pro for the last 30 years. Mostly portraits. I don’t really enjoy it as a hobby though. Most of my clients are surprised when I admit that.😁.

I am perfectly fine with the quality and accuracy of my $650 Reximex Throne 2. All the adjustment of the high end guns. But I'm not looking for competition quality, I'm looking to shoot tree rats. Airforce Condor fits right there and is much easier to upgrade/modify. Don't own one but just following the threads here Umarex Zelos/SnowPeak M60B fit there too.

Plenty of sub $1,000 guns that in the hands of the general shooter are more than sufficient.

My issue is kinda different. I have eight airguns, that I shoot on a semi-regular basis, but have only been into airguns for about 8-9 years....I have been into regular firearms for over 40 years, and have much invested into them.

I would love to have some high-end PCP's to shoot with, but just don't have the money for both hobbies, equally. The pumpers, Springers, NP's, and CO2's I have will be probably the deepest I delve into the airgun sport. I'll just keep buying and shooting those.

I was in the newspaper business most of the time. Covered mischief, murder and mayhem, also sports which is basically the same thing. I was shooting a wedding once and a guest told I looked like I was shooting a murder scene.

I agree as stated in this thread that specifically FX should indeed improve more in between their versions to warrant the price increase.

Getting a used Mk2 for $1k is in my opinion a way better deal than a new Mk4 for $2k+ for almost every shooter.
Agreed. FX seems to have gotten into the habit of introducing newer version of their products (Impacts) every six months along with new models before they are fully developed and de-bugged. On the other end of the spectrum, the English and Germans seem to rarely introduce new models or if they do, after a very long period of time. This is partially our fault for demanding so much from the manufacturers. There are a lot of good ideas and new concepts out there that we get wind of and want right away. Sometimes it's better to wait. The good thing is that we have a lot to choose from. Cheers.
