Hey, all. Some of you have heard or seen the new high capacity mags that Orion put out recently on another post, and on that same post I made mention that I had one on hand to test, and here is my post on it.
ive been shooting my impact a lot lately, and one of the things I’ve noticed with the factory mags is depending on which Ammo you use(I only shoot pellets) the inner core can hang up, and cause a dry fire. Not all the time, but enough to make me wonder if one got loaded or not each and every time I cycle the cocking handle. I’ve tried giving the magazine more spring tension, but it still gets hung up.
one of the other things I’ve noticed when shooting the 30 cal 44.75 pellets is my groups are stellar starting off with a full mag, snd once I’m down to around 8-10 shots left in the mag I notice my groups open up. It’s as if the spring tension now overcomes the lighter weight of the pellets left combined, and just shoved the pellet head hard to one side of the mags porthole into the breech.
out of both sheer frustration and just wanting to experiment, I resorted to the Huma single loaders which by the way work really well, but due to the loss of feeling between my thumb and first two fingers of my dominant hand, I found that more pellets fell onto the shooting table than going into the single loader, as I have trouble feeling the pellets going into the single loader hole.
So this past couple of weeks I’ve used the Orion mag in 30 caliber exclusively, both in my impact and a friends, and right away I noticed two things-
1. No more dry fires from mag hang up
2. no fliers from the mag being 2/3 empty. Fliers would only come about from my own shooting mistakes.
So let’s take a look see-
In the pic showing close up of the pellets inside, these are the Hatsan strikes that I use on occasion for initial chronograph tune testing and initially getting close to the bulls when target shooting. The skirts are longer than the jsb 44.75’s. The strike pellets for sure hang up against the clear plastic cover of the factory mags. Looking close you see ample gap from the edge of skirt to the top edge of the mag.
if any of you have the Elis5173 speed loafers and love the magnetized lids, you’ll like the lids on the Orion mags. I basically toss the lid on top of the mag and since the magnets are set up to only magnetize onto certain ones(there’s a name for that, I know, lol) the lid just affixes itself and snaps shut. The mag fits into the mag well nice and tight, and when I say tight, it slips in easily but there’s no wiggle on the mag when it’s in place. It pops in and out just like the factory mags and removes by toggling the mag release tab.
more pics-
in the pics above I show the shorter JSB Haydes. Lots more space from edge of skirt to top edge of mag. Orion also labels the mags for caliber, I just outlined it myself with a silver sharpie to see it faster, as I have all my impact high capacity mags and Elis speed loaders all stuffed together in a zip pouch.
so if you’re in need for more mags give these a try. At half the price of a standard factory mag, it’s good to go for both slug and pellets. Don’t quote me, but I believe these can be had in different colors, too. I give these Orion mags a big thumbs up on this design. I can tell a lot of design thought went into this, and i for one appreciate detailed designs.
It’s a good feeling knowing the worries of mag hang ups are all gone, and any fliers out of my groups are all my own fault, ha ha. Great job, Orion!
