The one Benchrest to Rule them all!

Okay gents, who has the best benchrest? I know it ain’t me!

I was setting up a benchrest today, and after I did I was looking at it for a bit (just a small table and chair and some custom cut wood) before I heard myself say, “wow my benchrest sucks.” Haha.

There are a lot of killer shooters on this site, especially of the benchrest type. So, post your benchrest setups and show everybody how much cooler you are than Columbo.

Years ago I bought a Black and Decker cast aluminum frame portable vise/table called Workmate. This is the most expensive model. I use it around the house for many tasks. It's very handy and helpful. Folds easy and is rock solid when set-up. I made a custom shaped plywood top with foam campers sleeping pad contact cemented to it. This top clamps int the jaws of the vise. It has served me excellent for many years. AND it is a useful tool/table/vise to use at home or away.

What I like best is you can customize the top to the shape you like best. AND the top can be cantalivered a put for lots of foot room. Built like a tank. Avoid cheap imitations.

i practice from inside the garage out the door

here is my bench when i first set it up with my sons rest and gun

my fancy expensive front and rear rest is in the yellow case under the bench

2' x 4' x 1.5" solid butcherblock top, with 1.5" galvanized pipe legs and docking air tank station. Heavy and solid. I won't say it won't move when you start leaning on it, but you almost have to try to make it move. Very good shooting platform, but a bear to get to the shooting line. This sucker is heavy.

Thanks guys. I made three for us. Two were the butcherblock, but for the third, I laminated (just used wood glue) two sheets of 3/4" MDF together, then cut it to the same pattern on the CNC router. Everything was weather sealed with three coats of Spar Urethane. The MDF bench was actually a little heavier. So far, it has experienced zero warpage or shape-shifting. If I was to build any more, I'd go with the 1 1/2" laminated MDF. You can get two 2' x 4' x 1 1/2" thick bench tops from a $32 4' x 8' sheet of 3/4" MDF, versus two bench tops from one $200 2' x 8' x 1 1/2" butcherblock counter top. Butcherblock is prettier, but that a lot of extra cost for nothing more than looks. They all shoot the same.
