The next "BIG" thing to hit air gunning....

I have been playing with guns that use air to shoot projectiles for a very long time....and doing "adult" airguns for about 30 years now....and still have most of them.

Seeing how things are changing so fast I am interested on what you see as the next big thing.....but let me define that a bit.

We are already seeing PCP guns that are in the sub $200 range that will shoot darn good, we see sub $300 regulated guns....I am not talking about in the next year we will see a $250 regulated gun....I am talking the next thing that people will go wow, get a big buzz going like the gauntlet/maximus/chief/multishot spring guns....what is next.

For me I am thinking the slow death of CO2 guns.

Standing back and looking at the market I see one big hole.....the replica guns are all still using CO2....it is a very small form factor, and works real well in a replica rifle or pistol.

I am thinking we will start to see replica rifles first, then replica pistols that use HPA....the fill is the one thing that will need to be overcome....but past that it sounds great.

I look at select fire as a toy, but I think it will sell.....but not like having a HPA 1911, Garand, 98k....

Thoughts?

I have been thinking that there might be a hybrid design resulting from a marriage between PCP and Springer that uses HPA to power the compression piston in an effort to achieve pressures higher than with HPA alone. I am thinking somewhere between 6K and 10K PSI for rifle (powder burning) velocity lead slugs of significantly more weight, downrange power and with a very flat trajectory that the standard diabolo pellet cannot achieve. ;)

I was hoping that there would be more research into the recoiless rifles like the HW 150, 300 and the Diana 34. It could be along the lines of improving shot cycle, harshness of recoil as well as power. In saying power I still wouldn’t want to loose the ability to shoot under the speed of sound. If I choose to shoot above the speed of sound I’d buy a rim fire or centre fire rifle.

I thought the brains trust by now could or would have invented/designed a spring , gas ram or hybrid system for a break barrel or lever action that a first time shooter could pick up and fire and say wow that’s accurate. Something easy and enjoyable to shoot that doesn’t require finding ‘the’ pellet and it’s unique special hold which is affordable to the average airgunner whilst still allowing the ability to tinker.

"shutik"I envision next big break thru will be improved ammunition.

Something that will work with higher pressure, around 5k PSI and and could be stabilized with supersonic speed.
With more guys weighing and sizing pellets, you would think JSB or other company would offer a more standardized pellet for an upgraded fee. I am quite certain many would be willing to pay more for pellets that are the same size and weight.

Very little really new in the World.
Just me but I do not envision "the next big thing" well. Heck "tacti-cool" was a shock to me in the airgun world, but not a new idea/thing.

HPA replica rig's? There is the Modoc rolling block HPA cartridge rifle. Not such a hit. Look's like it might fit in a collection but most people seem to want airguns to use more than look at ?
There are a number of "action pistols"using refillable carts, again more to look at than use for target or ballons even.
These types of rigs seem ( to me ) more suited to Co2 as you get a decent number of shots, if you use the same space for air - 1 or 2 shots and we know you would need 6+. Co2 being "self regulating" is a huge plus for airguns.

JSB's ultra costly select premium pellets certainly have NOT worked out. Cant see anyone figuring out how to make a higher quality ( mass produced) pellet.

Recoil less 30fpe springers have been made for years ( okay no longer but you can still find them and the designs are well know).

Not exactly buit Thurman wants a Quigley pumper/springer/pcp ish rifle, wouldnt be a new idea tho. And the electric cocking springer sure didnt sell well.

We have true MOA airgun barrels, I cant see them getting much better and honestly how many amoung us can shoot better than MOA?

Just not much new to do, so, PLEASE bring back some old designs!

Crosman 600 anyone? THE most fun Co2 semi-auto air [pistol ever made! The 600 and MKI MKII were replica's and solid and still work today, wow.

More OLD idea's, build airguns whose o-rings last 10+ years, as all airguns were made until the last few years.

I'm on the side of better pellets. If you buy decent quality, 55 grain, .22 caliber varmint bullets, the variation from bullet to bullet will be less than .2 grains. I can't think of any pellet manufacturer who gets that close with a .177 pellet! And I agree with the JSB comment. About all the premium pellets do for me is cost more!

Some great ideas....I want to comment on a few.

As to the poster that commented on finding THE pellet....this is not different from the powder burning world...I have boxes of 22's some of my guns like this brand others like that brand. Goes on to centerfire as well, I am a reloader, the difference that a grain of powder here, this powder that, that primer, COAL, and I will not even start will bullets....all is tuned for that gun....those Fclass guys are really crazy to get those groups....that does not happen with over the counter ammo at walmart.

The "smooth" twist as I understand it is also something that has been around for years in the form of polygonal rifling, you could also say marlins "micro groove" is also something that the air gun world has followed....for the same reasons these other two are finding favor...keep the pellet, or bullet nice and pretty....they also clean a bit more easy.

I am sure we are going to see higher pressures up to a point....past that there is going to be a smaller and smaller market.

Back to ammo, I really think the limiting factor are our pellets....they really do not have a friendly BC....you can really only push them so far and so fast. You can ring plates all day with a 17, or 22 rimfire and I have rang plates out to 300 yards with a 17 and a 22 wmr....you are never going to push a pellet that far and hit what you want to hit with its current design.....perhaps we will see a change to some more wind friendly shapes.

This has been fun...I usually don't do what I want for christmas lists like this, but it was a slow day watching servers update....now I am messing with exchange transport services....yawn.

I think the next big thing will be an affordable, reliable home compressor. The cheap chinese compressors now available are showing promise, I think we are getting pretty close to a domestic seller offering a $500 compressor that doesn't require the user to provide a first stage compressor. Sure, there is a good likelihood that it will be a rebranded Chinese one, but having a US company behind it for support would be great.

But opinions are like feet, everyone has a couple and they usually stink! :)

Only thought "airguns" ( and still cant come up with an original idea) but reading back through.
John may have nailed it as far as a big thing. We did all dodge a big one recent;ly when one bill that would have made most of the most commonly popular airguns illegal as we know them now.

I shot slugs in 2000 with a career 707II .25 and used HI sometimes. NOT what I think of for "airguns". Instantly I need full HOT rinfire range backstops, think 1/2 mile or so. If you want a firearm replacement, way to go. An airgun to be used Squirrel hunting many places or in a common yard it was not UNLESS using diablo pellets.

The pellet quality really isnt an - for most, say BR folks are an exception/sometimes- issue.
We used to be able to shoot pellets well above the 850-900fps range often excepted as the common FPS for best accuracy recently.
Then some found better barrels and prep , suddenly now we can again shoot out of the tin JSB ( example) at speed back up to just over 1,000fps. NOT due to pellets but do to barrels. SO just me but, we need better barrels not pellets.

Now that the original shoebox compressor is back down in the $400 range ( competition is good, for us), a quality altros booster is just over $600.00 and all the import low cost pumps, it does seem someone could make / contract a good small home compressor at a low cost.
