The Naming of Guns

There've been some discussions here on AGN regarding the naming of guns. Included have been the hits and misses of manufacturers in the names they choose for their products, but the most entertaining threads involve the names that individual air gunners assign to their favorite (or, in some cases, most hated) air guns. Some names are clever, some are nostalgic, and some are just plain goofy. But sometimes, the name just reveals itself in the most unexpected ways.

When I decided to get into PCPs, I researched guns, air sources, prices, support... all the stuff you need to know. In the end I put together a package at a price we could afford. We made a deal, my wife and I, that when I found a new job I could get the gun. I was up front about the cost for a package to include a Marauder .177, a hand pump, and an extra magazine: ~ $600. That's the number she programmed into her head: six hundred dollars. Come last June I had a solid job offer and she gave me the go-ahead to get the gun and whatnot. For $600, mind you, and not a penny more (I cheated and spent $601 and change).

A few weeks ago I was preparing to go shooting yet again and she cheerily goads me by calling out, "Are you going to go shoot your six-hundred dollar gun again?" In that moment my gun stopped being "my new PCP" and became something much more personal. Rather than get in a twist over the actual cost of the gun itself, I hijacked her sarcasm and christened my gun "Six-hunny". Now when I let her know I'm headed out to shoot I tell her that I have a date with "Six-hunny" and won't be back for a few hours. She takes it all in stride, of course.

My 1960s-vintage Crosman 187 Co2 rifle that cost less than $30 brand-new that I converted to regulated high-pressure-bottle air pistol with simple hand and power-tools has captured 3 State and 3 National Champion titles (to date). As she's definitely old, definitely home-grown, and might have been conceived with benefit of a bit of 'inspiration', I'm very proud of her name.

My favourite plinker is called “S**t of a rifle” it’s a 177 Benjamin Trail. Most of the time is very accurate but then all of a sudden the pellet doesn’t hit where it’s intended. My wife can hear me calling it’s name out loud until disappearing into the shed to fix it.

So ironlion you have gone over to the dark side, the springer world has lost a great advocate. Bench rest anybody 😂

@kdog, if that group at 50 yards was shot from the standing off-hand then the gun isn't the only BEAST at work there! Bench-rested, sitting with shooting sticks, prone with a bag, or sitting enthroned on a silver unicorn while listening to angels sing praises to the Lord for your gifts as a marksman, that's a pretty great group. So Nice!

It was shot last week from a bench and bag and THANK YOU but its the rifle,,,it is a lazer.I get consistent 5 shot groups that i can easily cover with a dime at 50yds. Heres a pic of the back of this group with a pellet for comparison.

Perhaps i should call it the BLUE LAZER lol. NAAAA i like BLUE BEAST!

I have two 300S rifles, one is in very good shape, probably 98% or better on the bluing in a pretty nice stock, I call her the "Queen". The second one is some what on the rough side, there are some pretty deep gouges on the barrel sleeve, the bottom of the stock and trigger guard, I call her "Ugly Betty". She's really a sweet heart though and I'll probably refinish the stock this winter, don't really know what to do about the gouges on the barrel sleeve though.

I also have a Diana 48 and a RWS 34. The 34 is my gun to just pick up and shoot when I want to have fun and has no name. The 48 however is my first air gun and the learning curve to shoot it well was a challenge to say the least. I'm still not convinced that it likes me or that I really like it either for that matter. It has and has had many names, most cannot be mentioned here though. I thought about selling it's cantankerous a$$ but don't want to give it the satisfaction of finding someone it really likes. lol
