Do you know why when shooting with slugs the hole in the paper is cleaner (perfectly round) than when shooting with pellets?

No but I have noticed the holes in my targets are cleaner when I have a fresh cardboard backer installed in the frame.
Maybe what you are seeing is due to the slug having a smooth taper and the pellet being skirted? Just a guess.

It’s the nose shape. Round nose slugs also make poor holes. Most slugs are hollow point which are like a hole punch. You will find the hole punch outs dots if you look.

The "punched" hole from the hollow point slug will usually be smaller in diameter than the bullet diameter. Keep that in mind if you trying to precisely measure groups by deducting the projectile diameter from the outside edge to outside edge width of the group. Shoot a match type flat nosed pellet next to a slug and compare the hole sizes.
