So, I’ve tested a lot of slugs over the past 2 years out of different FX liners, 600, 700, STX, SLUG and SUPERIOR. I know what I like and I know what I don’t, what shoots and what doesn’t, at what velocity. I don’t say my gun is a moa gun at 100yds, 150yds or 200yds unless it can shoot five shot groups under 1moa, over and over and over, not just one time. Not just 2 or 3 shot groups either. Yes, that might sound a little harsh and I’m not calling anyone out, those are just my standards, obviously everyone will have there own. I think multiple 5 shot groups will give a good indication of what you, your gun and ammunition can do together. Shooting under 1 moa at 100yds or farther is harder than a lot of guys make it sound. I usually prefer pellets out to 100yds, even in very light wind. They’re just more accurate! I know some will debate that fact, but I’ve shot a lot more small groups with pellets to 100yds than I have with slugs, so you aren’t going to change my mind. These Hybrids might be the start of changing my mind though. I’ve yet to see this kind of accuracy repeat itself, over and over and over again.
When the Superior liner came out, I was pretty burnt out on testing slugs but I did buy one because I found it in stock when they were sold out everywhere else. I also bought 500 of the Hybrids to test. I tested them fairly quickly at various velocities from low to high, focusing in the mid 900’s where I was told they shoot best. They shot okay but there are VK and NSA that I like a whole lot better. For standard slugs and the JSB 33.95 MKII pellets, I do like the SLUG liner better.
So to the point...I tested the Hybrids out of the Superior liner quickly, probably too quickly. But then the other day, I saw a response to a post that said something like, “I’ve never seen a Superior liner that doesn’t shoot the Hybrids well. If they don’t shoot, give them a little lube.” I thought to myself, I never did try lubing them and I did try lube on all the other slugs I tested. To be honest, like I said, I was burnt out on testing slugs, when they didn’t shoot well after tuning at all of the velocities, I kind of gave up on them before going through the normal checklist of things I did while testing all of the other slugs.
So, I thoroughly cleaned my FX Superior liner last night and went to the range at 7am this morning before it hits 110 here in Nor Cal. I seasoned the barrel(only about 30 shots) at 50yds and 75yds while adjusting for my starting velocity and then started shooting groups and testing accuracy. I’ll get to the point...I got the gun dialed at 955-960fps and shot teeny tiny little groups at 50, 75 yds and multiple groups under an inch at 100yds. Never, with any slug, have I shot this many groups under an inch at 100yds in one sitting like I did this morning. There always seems to be wind, a flier, bad technique, or a bad shot that ruins my groups. I came home absolutely astonished with the groups I just shot from 50yds to 165yds and also learned a valuable lesson on testing, it has to be thorough no matter how tired, burnt out, skeptical or how poorly they seem to shoot at first. All I did was lightly lube(WD-40 Silicone formula/blue-yellow-silver can) the slugs as recommended and the slugs/gun shot way better than they had previously.
I was only at the range for 2.5 hours, i got there and set things up, took about an hour to get the HS and reg. dialed to the best velocity for the Hybrids where they seemed to be shooting accurately. From then on, I just shot groups for about an hour. I didn’t take a lot of pictures because I myself am pretty skeptical of things I see posted these days, but hopefully those of you that know me, know that I’m honest about this kind of stuff.
The pictures that are attached are a 5 shot group under 3/4” at 100yds(my thumb is just under 5/8” across). A picture of our range with the white metal targets I shot(3/4” group) hanging from the left side of the 100yd stand and a picture of 10 shots at our 5” gong at 165yds. It was freshly painted white, so I was just quickly aiming at the center and shooting pretty fast. Without the light breeze there wouldn’t have been the horizontal stringing and this group would have been something really special. As is, I’m guessing it was about 2.5” or a little under. The plate was hanging in a bush at a slight angle, that’s why all the splatter goes to the left. There is also a picture of my magazine with modifications.
Oh, for the record, I was shooting at 955-960fps, my ES for each magazine(28rnds) is about 11fps. my regulator it set at 110bar, the HS preload has about 1/8” of wiggle, the power wheel was on max, the valve adjuster up front was on 3.75 lines(almost all the way open, then I closed it until the velocity dropped about 10-15 fps. and the groups were smallest. I shot the groups from the magazine but my mags have been modified so they shoot very accurately with no deformation. These are the most accurate slugs I’ve shot thus far...Lots of teeny tiny groups at 50 and 75 yds, multiple groups under an inch at 100yds and a 2.5-3 inch group at 165yds, all shot in about 1 hour. I will continue to test them this week and let you know how things go.
I think the point of this post is that just because someone else says their gun does shoot and yours doesn’t, or the other way around, isn’t the end of the world. Barrels, although the same model and length can shoot very differently. A slug or pellet may shoot well out of one gun and not the other. There are so many variables...HS preload, power wheel, regulator, valve adjuster, barrel make and cleanliness, etc... that can effect the accuracy or whether a slug will or will not shoot. When you get information from another person or online, you need to take it with a grain of salt and use it for a starting point. If the slugs work from that starting point, great. If not, be methodical, make one adjustment at a time and take great notes. It’s also a great idea to shoot 5-10 rounds after switching from one projectile to another before actually starting the accuracy testing. It’s also a great idea to do all of the testing at a set pressure range(230-200BAR) even with regulated guns. Just make sure to be thorough, exactly the opposite of me and my experience. I almost gave up on the best slug I’ve shot thus far.
Another thing I almost forgot to mention...Of all the slugs I’ve tested, I’ve never seen any improve this drastically with just the addition of a lubricant. Usually the benefit is a cleaner barrel, for longer. This difference in this instance was astonishing, I’ve never seen this accuracy improvement before and frankly, wouldn’t have believed it.
Sorry this post got so long, I kind of got out of control but wanted to include all of the necessary information.
Have a great day! Stoti
