The future of airguns

I don’t have the range for slugs, but will try them and play with them just the same. I love learning and don’t want to shun new things. Perhaps there’s something to learn.

I recently got a sleeve of FX Hybrid .25 and I’m praying they work lights out from my GA PT KGC. If they do, they may come out pig hunting with me. With enough resistance, they will expand nicely. I think a pig’s skull is just the thing. Here’s a .22 into clay.

Now, the future of Airguns that I care not so much for is the Autos or Semi-autos. Personal preference, but the industry will be getting regulated faster than what you anticipate, mostly because of this. I can’t say if this is a good thing or not, but it’s coming fast and hard. When this happens, perhaps you will be unable to just order your favorite PCP and have it come to your door. Perhaps that Lead Dust Collector 😉 will need a federal stamp.

After seeing Ted Holdover, I got that he said avoid knockouts and FX hybrids unless you have a non slug barrel less than 600 mm, at least for the FX guns he tried. The FX Crown Continuum in .22 cal I ordered will have the 700 mm dedicated to a slug tune, and I will probably get a slug liner for the 400 mm barrel, but its focus will be pellets. The 25 / 30 cal barrel to be purchased, are a we shall see, but most likely a 25 cal in 500/600 mm.

My Brocock Compatto just does not have the power to shoot slugs so a non topic with the gun, it is on a pellet only diet.

Well you have all enlightened me a great deal from this thread. Here I was thinking everyone was trying or using slugs to further their airgunning experience, but it seems the niche they have is much smaller than I thought. I do like the accuracy I am seeing with both my guns on pellets, but I truly though slugs were going to overtake pellets at some point at being the ammo of choice. I know there’s a large group of air gunners that shoot long range, but I honestly thought the flatter trajectory and lower bc of slugs was a large advantage even in short distances especially for hunting.

I have a box of Fx hybrid in .22 and will buy a box/sleeve of 100 .25 hybrids. I only use them for pests that damage and threaten pets and kids. Most often day time feral dogs and night time raccoons. Mostly I use JSB 25 gr in .25 in my Impact at lower velocities. When I hunt squirrels I only take shots where if i miss I hit the tree. So I don't have any trouble with my neighbors. Have a house lot on three acres and raise irrigated hay and pasture, a couple of calves, goats and sell goat milk as " pet food" what people do with it after they leave here I don't know, rabbits, chickens, ducks, kids and pets. All inside the city limits in a small neighborhood zone agricultural 2. There is about 10 small "farmsteads" on a 40 acres site. We all have city water in the house, septic systems, dirt "roads", cable, etc. Every once in a while they try and change our zoning but we stick together and since all of us are the only ones in the zone we have our resident lawyer send a notarized letter with all our signatures and a copy of the Business portion of our tax return showing what we raise and sell. Someday one of use will sell out or pass away and the city might be able to rezone us based on what the new owner uses that property for like a small housing development. 10 households would be able to out vote us and change zoning. Nuff of boring you.

The misconception is you think the group of air gunners shooting slugs is large. Trust me, it’s not compared to the group that doesn’t. The group that doesn’t spreads worldwide. There is a slightly larger group trying them, but frustration, reality or safety puts them back on pellets. I hope slug guns never become mainstream. I don’t want kids shooting birds in neighborhoods with them. It will be the end of our hobby.

I don't give a damn about slugs.

ha! ditto. i like shooting air rifles for the “ matching the weaopn to the game factor”. its like traditional bowhunting. the thrill is in close range shots and taking of game. i get a thrill out of that 15 yard kill shot on a nice doe with my recurve. killing a deer at over 50 yards with a compound and sights isnt for me. just like i will stick to shorter ranges and pellets. JMO.

How'd you know I was a longbow guy?

I agree. I've got a motto I try to stick to: "If you can't get within 100 yards of an animal, you ain't got no business shooting at it."

Longbows, flintlocks, regular old airguns. Worked forever, work now. Only thing that's changed is the laziness of the hunter.

Bear takedown and Kota Badlands longbow are a couple of my favorites. still use cedar arrows. just like i’ll stick with simple pellets.

I seldom use slugs. This summer we have more raccoons and I keep 1 pcp rifle loaded with FX hybrids, with a mounted light. cause they claw through the shingles to get into the attic, tear up lawn furniture cushions, bite hoses to get a drink, and spread parasitic diseases and are a danger to pets. And that's the short list. The FX slugs make a devastating hole in them.

title of the thread is misleading....

I thought I was gona wade into a vigorous discussion about ergonomics, materials and market acceptance... figured be a great place to espouse my lunatic fringe position on those subjects.... ;)

back to the OP.... I dont think slugs will ever be all that mainstreeam until Crosman, Gamo and Umarex offer “slug ready” models of their popular models AND vendor branded slugs at comparible prices to pellets, and that ammo is available anywhere pellets are.

gotta remember that we, as airgun forum members (any forum) are in the MINORITY as far as airgun shooters go. What is common knowledge to us is likley unheard of to the rest of airgun owners.....
