The Case for Low Power

Here is a great reason for low powered verry accurate guns. I shot this Chipmunk with my HW30 at about 6fpe, from 12 yards exactly. Notice the gray marking from the pellet on the white PLASTIC shelving behind it. It was just standing right in front of it, and I decided that a hole on the plastic was worth the dead Chipmunk. Ma, no! The critter took most of the energy and my shelving stayed intact.

.177 i assume? nice shot. People forget that "low power" is quite lethal and in many ways more accurate

I agree. and don't forget shot count. Shooting my Red Wolf at 20 FPE and that big bottle up front I can shoot and shoot and shoot with out a fill up. My pony bottle is collecting dust.

A Beeman R7 (HW30) was all I had for nearly 30 years until I found out what's available today. Served me well and still does. I've taken raccoons at 25 yards with it. I wouldn't recommend it ordinarily. But if the lead is properly placed, it will do the job. Lots to be said in favor of "low power".

A ten meter gun is probably the best out there for accuracy and low power but the price of admission is pretty terrible. Some of the guns are adjustable. I've got a daystate with high medium and low power but even low power is pretty hard hitting it you are concerned about penetration.

I purchased a FX Streamline in 177 just for that very reason. Low power ( and noise) If you havnt considered one they are fantastic.. I only use med power. Good luck with your decision!!

I really dig the single stroke pneumatic tech, but the reason i just ordered a HW30s over the Daisy Match Grade Avanti 753S, is mostly because the break barrel is going to be miles easier for me to load (and possibly easier/simpler to service). And to back peddle a little, i would imagine that there is a threshold where the power is too low, for hunting?

This little $100 SPA CR600W (Mrodair Plinkster) was pure poison on the hole diggers a few weeks ago.

Nicely done! That low power/ speed along with the slow motion allows for visualization of the whole flight of the pellet.

Lots of kritters around the farms where I pest control and I usually shoot up into trees and 99% of the time use low power on my .22 FX Streamline ...



works like a charm on my shots out to 30 yards... Longer shots would likely need level 2 or 3, but for close work , 500ish fps is plenty for small game.

It seems to me that there are very good reasons to enjoy low power for backyard plinking and target shooting out to 40 yards or so:

1) Lower noise level (with some guns),

2) higher shot count on a charge,

3) use of lighter weight pellets saves a little money, perhaps, as well.

With my Red Wolf .22, I intend to shoot it mostly on LOW power with 16 gr JSBs for pinking, reactive targets, and paper punching at up to 40 yards or so - which is by far the bulk of my backyard shooting needs.

On the occasion where I may need to remove a destructive prairie dog, I will go to JSB 18 gr and dial up HIGH power.

I think that the case for low power is a very good one!

DHart If you have the HP version, hi power will most likely spiral 18.1 JSBs out of control. At least that's what mine does, I haven't changed anything with the programming. Low power 18.1s fly at 870 fps and I can shoot around 200 with one fill. I would get some tins of the 25gr redesigned for Prairie Dogs, that pellet and the RedWolf are like peas and carrots.

i agree. my 2400kt shooting 7fpe is now my go to gun for hosps and chippers. no pass throughs.

What type of FPS are you getting between the settings? I'm using a Challenger 2009 (falcon 7.31gr @ avg 540 fps, stv 7.3, across 10 shots) for backyard use, engaging squirrels 15 yards max with no problems, but looking for a 1)external adjustable power, 2)regulated, 3)lever action and 4)multi-shot magazine rifle and the ability to have 5)similar low power setting as a 10m rifle. Thanks in advance.

I watch a lot of UK-based hunting vids. I've seen a LOT of animals taken with 12ft/lbs and rarely,if ever, does one run away. Its ALL about puttin' the bisquit-in-the-basket. My old Crosman760 with a cheap-a^* scope accounted for about 1,000 starlings in its day and it only did about 650 with a pellet.
