The best long range airgun

The answer will depend on the individual and their preference. I like to shoot silhouette at long range and have small group size, under MOA or I work up a tune or modify the gun to get me there. There are plenty of airgun options out there that are that accurate, but not necessarily powerful enough for hunting purposes, but I like what AAA offers. It is the best of both worlds and you don't have to do a lot of "work" to get what you want out of them.

I should add that I originally meant for hunting when I started the topic.

It was a very clear question but now you muddy the water because it all depends on what type of hunting!

And what's in that .007 inch that makes folks reach for the .257 and not the .25? Available barrels mainly?

Yes barrel and ammo. Normal airgun .25 barrels with 1:23 twist rate are considered fast and .25 slug barrel are around 1:18 shooting shorter and lighter 40 grain and lower slugs. the .257 barrels are designed for heavy slugs only with twist rate of 1:14 range shooting slugs 90-200+ grains with BC of .22 vs .09 of normal .25 slugs and .33 of .25 pellets. Completely different system/design. The .257 boat tail slugs have the highest BC of just about any slugs which means it has the best down range accuracy because it will be slowed down the least or fly fastest down range which means less drop and less affected by the wind.

I’ll try to clarify it even more, let’s say there is a praire dog out in the open at 200 yards, you can pick any gun, any slug. I’m surprised I haven’t heard more people bring up the impact which I thought would be most peoples answer, also surpised I haven’t heard any daystate or RAW answers. I ask this question because I planned on waiting until this spring to buy an impact mk2 or see if a mk3 was announced, not knowing a ton about tuning though I am kind of worried about getting an impact as it seems to be a gun made for people who are extremely into tuning. Not saying tuning is something I don’t want to get into, it’s just something I don’t have much knowledge on as of now and would be worried about my ability to tune a gun like the impact, I feel I would find myself getting frustrated a lot. Because of this, i’ve started looking at other options such as the RAW. I plan on hunting with slugs and reaching out to ranges of 150 and maybe potentially further. My taipan did great out to 100 with pellets but didn’t like slugs so I decided to try something new.

Lol, so you want a sponsored Youtube account's answer or do you want the truth? Those two are often if not always different. The .257 Texan is the more accurate. If you want an Impact go buy one.

Good thing you clarified your questions a little better. Your original question as I read is the best long range rifle with best accuracy/groups at longest possible distance, the Texan .257 simply can't be beat as far as I know because of the LW barrel and .22 BC slugs. Once setup correctly it will give 1 inch group at 200 yards and farther fairly easy but it only has 3-10 shots depending on power and the slugs are 30 cents a pop or much more. It's big, it's loud and need some work to tame it. The impact or maverick or even daystate aren't in the same league or even category in terms of accuracy and power because they are designed for totally different use cases.

Now with your added information I take you are only shooting to 150 yards and most likely would want good shot count and less expensive ammo. With that in mind then yes, the crown, impact and maverick with 700mm barrel in either .22 or .25 caliber shooting heavier slugs with BC of 0.1 will get you best results you are looking for. Daystate can also get you get with the right slugs but FX has it dialed with the new superior and superior heavy barrels. Plenty of video online to prove it, I'm sure others also had great success with slugs in other guns but FX is most readily available and off the shelf gun for your application. Call Utah air, SPAW, Talon Tunes to name a few and tell them you want to shoot 34 or even 40 grain slugs in the caliber of your choice and they will set the gun up for you. You just have to air up and shoot, it's the quickest and most proven way to get what you want that I know.

I’ve done a fair amount of prairie dogs hunting and I can tell you that wind often makes it a real challenge at longer ranges. I have no experience with the Texan guns but I do with RAW and daystate and FX.
I hope to do some PD hunting this spring/ summer I doubt I will even take a air rifle. Why? First the wind and second most of the time the shots inside 200 yards are few and far between unless you happen to get into a town that hasn’t been “used” Which doesn’t happen often. The 17 HMR is about the minimum and beyond 100 yards they don’t do all that well. A 223 and 22-250 are what I’ve found best.
Now this is based on my experience others may have had different . I’m not saying you couldn’t use an impact but your hit percentage is going to be pretty low beyond 100. I’m not to sure it’s a humane way to hunt either. My opinion

Wimpanzee, maybe something is wrong with your setup or ammo- out of the box I could get 1 inch groups at 50 with my Texan 45. With a Mad Dog stock installed shooting from a bench, I can frequently get 1 inch at 100. This is with NSA slugs, 290 or 350 gr, around 870-890 fps.

Texan 257 is a little better with 85 gr NSA slugs at 950 FPS. Easier to shoot accurately because there is less recoil to manage.

I can get similar groups with my FX Impact at 100 with 0.30 hybrids, but the BC of available ammo is quite a bit lower than for the NSA 257, and accuracy isn’t as good at longer distances.

I bought into the texan hype, and purchased a new, .457 carbine, TX2 CF version.

It sucks to shoot. The ergonomics aren't bad – they don't exist.

I'm still trying to get better than a 6" group at 50 yards. My 909s will do touching shots at 50.

It's not all roses.

Haha oh man. I can get 2" reliably at 75-100 yards with my Talonp pistol (with a stock) shooting NSA slugs….I would suggest that something is either horribly wrong with your gun or your shooting

The Texan and AirForce platform is reliable, easy to mod, easy to swap barrels and top hats and so on, and is most definitely the best marksman for the .257 with power plenty for shooting slugs. If you want 120 yards and less, go with a Daystate. Their reputation is unparalleled in quality and reliability. They just came out with a new gun called the Delta Wolf (I have not shot this or even looked at it yet but it is cool).

My little Talonp AirForce Pistol can do very good out at 100 yards. A Texan is the best for your application but it isn't for the faint or weak.

Yeah, I've tried 3 different slugs from Bob Vogel, 300, 333, 350, and NSA slugs in 240 dish base and 302 boat tails...no luck with much of any of them. I emailed AirForce and never got an answer back.

I've decided to hold off shooting it more until I can get some better range time. Our public ranges here are pretty crowded.
