Texas cull hunt

I’ve just begun a weekend hunt today in Mason, TX. This is a whitetail cull hunt; no trophies but putting meat in the freezer. Took a spike with the .457 Airforce Texan this evening. The shot was taken at 80 yards. I am utilizing the 265gr NSA slugs. This isn’t the latest and greatest Airforce Texan but performance is still darn good. I am getting 4 good shots that average 855 fps. I am utilizing a Neil Clague moderator which makes the gun quieter than a .22 rimfire.

I chose a neck shot on this spike. He was facing away from me and wasn’t presenting me with any good shots. This changed as he looked over at a 90 degree direction from his body. I squeezed off the shot which impacted the neck about between his shoulder and head, a bit high which took out vertebrae and spine. He dropped right where he stood.

I’ve 2 more deer I can take. I hope to capture 1 take on video if all shakes out well. I’ll also upload a few pictures when my service improves. Stay tuned.

Nice shooting. I have to assume Texas is over run with deer and pigs. Makes for good hunting.

That's true Dawg...

However it's important to understand while Texas is larger than some European nations, most of that land is vast, empty, some of it stretching for miles in every direction, but privately owned, and some of those land owners don't like strangers on their property. They still have the old 1800's Range Laws in action, and trespassing/hunting on private property without owner's permission is a very very bad idea.

I lived in Texas for about 20 years, and I never saw so much flat empty land in my life, especially in West, South-Central, and South Texas. It's tempting to get out of your car in the middle of nowhere, miles from the nearest residence, and do some shooting. However, if you are caught on someone's property without permission, you can be arrested at gunpoint, and jailed...if you are caught trespassing on private property after dark the property owner can use deadly force on you with no questions asked. These laws were enacted back when horse theft, cattle and other farm animal rustling was common, especially in the dark of night. Texas never revoked those range laws, and they are very much in effect today. Obtaining property owner permission is essential.

The good news is there are a lot of Texas hunting lodges where you can buy hunting privileges for a reasonable price, lodging and meals provided, and some of them guarantee you go home with a hog, or other game animals.

Just some random thoughts from my Texas experiences...

i live in liberal California and I think there is nothing wrong with those laws! Would people rather have laws here where it’s your fault if the robber hurts themselves when robbing you?

to OP, that’s one fantastic shot!

What a good hunt it was. I was finished after the second hunt. I took the spike on Friday eve and 2 does on Saturday morning.

Saturday began with a lot of cloud cover and then some rain came in just as sunrise should have been brightening things up. A cold front was approaching and the rain came in! Surprisingly, a lone doe eased in. She was cautiously checking things out. I really didn’t waste any time. She presented a shot I was confident in and I made good of it with another neck shot. She dropped immediately.

Just about 2 hours later, the rain cleared out as the front came in. The air got crisp and cooler. Several deer showed up. Another nice doe was at 85 yards and gave me another neck shot. I didn’t hesitate and dropped her with a high shot a few inches under her jaw line.

As you can see, the .457 and 265gr NSAs are a devastating combo. Know your gun and ballistics, utilize a range finder and practice shooting to up confidence and ability. With these key points and a great weapon, ethical kills are eminent.

I not only enjoyed a good hunt but some great relaxation, BBQ and time with my fam. Hope you all enjoyed the ride along. BTW, that’s a 3 shot group from 70 yards in the picture of the cactus pad behind the Texan.

Good show(s) Derrick! What an excellent post.

The Texan performed flawlessly; both Texans, that is. I see you also got to enjoy the totally and uniquely Texan experience of Coopers BBQ. I put on 20 pounds in the 5 years I lived in Llano, thanks to Coopers BBQ and Blue Bell Home-Made Vanilla ice-cream (yet another Texas tradition).

Did you also make a detour through Boys Town (another Texas tradition)? 👧 😂
