Terminal Ballistics: .30cal or .22cal for Feral Pigeons?

He's way slow on the velocity. That's the big caveat here I think. I've smacked pigeons with 15 fpe 22 and they fly away, 43 fpe(approx 30 fpe on impact) 25 Knocks the moon dust off them like their ghost is left standing where they were without a pass thru with hades.

He's got a slow 30 throwing bricks, so less problems like my 75 fpe 22 that just zings thru with soft javelin slugs, and that deformed 34 grain long body slug is off to Narnia at 800 fps.
The weird thing about my barra is I haven’t had accuracy issues even when shooting slugs at 850… at least not to about 50-60 yards…. I only really started extending my range beyond that the passed 2 or 3 weeks… I like the lighter faster ones for how flat they shoot and how hard they hit.

After what I saw yesterday though I’d bet money that at 125+ the 35gr doing 900fps would do better than the 30s doing 960.

Once again I’m so happy my new scope can let me save more than one zero’ing profile lol. Because I think on the extra windy days those 35gr are gonna be money… or it I get a chance to shoot at a coyote 100y+

have you seen this video posted in general yet ? food for thought maybe ?

Some decent information and results in the equal foot pounds area in multiple calibers ( .177 , .22 , .25 ) with real world results explained .

Matthias = Maybe some food for thought for that active and talented mind of yours lol. :giggle: :coffee:
I know slugs and pellets are not the same but I do believe that expansion is a function of speed. There’s a lot more that goes into that I know so don’t come for me please haha. But if all factors pretty much the same then the velocity will matter most. It also backs up what I’ve noticed hunting the passed couple weeks. I can shoot a 36gr and a 30gr slug at the same 60fpe but it “looks” like the 30 hits harder. The difference is one is doing like 950ish and the other one is in the 860s… I never had anything go tumbling like the squirrel I posted in that video, until I started slinging the 30’s at 960.

Im also getting no pass through. I explained above that squirrel in the video had a little something “extra” on the other side but it was a slug fragment at best. To be fair I haven’t hit anything less than 40y aways so idk about short range. A 35gr doing about 870 cuts a quail in half though 🤷‍♂️ oops.
