Temperature and available light(edit) and scope mounts. Which affects your scope more?

While I've never experienced poi shift from my Sightrons, I do experience range shifts. This is mostly due to available light vs ambient temp. I have yet to let my scope bake in the sun, but also have the necessary equipment to keep it shaded during a match so don't see the need.

What scopes have less or more shift as a brand, and model than anyone would like to add here?

I have experienced temp shifts that affected ranging on numerous scopes including March and Kahles and Sightrons and Athlon… the trick is to keep them out of direct sunlight to minimize the problem. I also make additional magnetic wheels for my scopes and calibrate them in different temperature ranges <50 - 75, 75 to 85 And 85 to 95 as I live in the Deep South but I still keep them out of direct sunlight when I’m not shooting

I have an adjustable pointer for my scope I got years ago (dont remember now who I got it from) but as the scope shifted you could account for that by moving the pointer up or down some. Works great IF you understand how much the scope shifts and how much to move the pointer.

Maestro Designs carries them - they are called dual pin indicators

when the shift occurs it can affect the ranging by as much as 3-4 clicks

A few of us out west started using the ATHLON HERAS series last season finding they pretty much seem to have very little to no temp shift in parrilax ranging.
The Hunter group using the 6-24x56 SFP Mil and the WFTF or Open guns the larger 15-60x56 in mil pretty much.
Both scopes seem to be very solid and range quite well for a mid budget optic,

Much like Motorhead, I've not experienced any issues with any Athlon scopes, even the entry level Argos and I've shot in 40-100 degree weather with it. My Hawke Sidewinders have never given me any reason to question temp shift either.
Two things came to mind while reading this post which is a little off the OP topic but I've seen where rings can be too close to the scope saddle causing the erector tube to distort and not range correctly and overtightening can cause tube distortion as well. Move the rings as far apart as possible and don't overtighten unless you have the recoil of an M82.

On the topic of mounts, I prefer a one piece with a bit more beef/uniform thickness. I've used BKL, Burris Signature/X, UTG standard and Pro, Sportsmatch, FX No Limits and so on. All but BKL and UTG Pro have induced some type of temp related movement. The worse in the group mentioned were the FX No Limit. Regardless of how tight the set screw is for the verticle adjustment it won't stay still.

At this time my favorite are the UTG Pro one piece. I used one on my thomas, and now have it on my .308cf. If/when they come out with a 40mm one peice mount I'll be getting one(the sightron S8 is chonky).
