Decided to clean out my 25 yard backyard target box this morning. I had done this once before, but didn't attempt to save any of the lead. So this is less than half of what I have been shooting since I started up with air rifles again in July of this year. Thought that some of my fellow Cowboy Action shooters might want the lead if they cast their own bullets?
This target box is a wooden box within which something was shipped to me. It is not conducive to filling with rubber mulch as I cut out an opening in the front. There is a 1/4" steel plate in the back, and I had been using foam and rolled craft paper packing material in front of the steel plate to keep the noise down. Of course all of that stuff got shot to pieces and I was starting to hear a lot more seeming direct hits on the steel plate.
But I had a blow-out on the freeway last weekend on my way to the range in my RV, so when I got the tires replaced this week, I kept a couple of the old ones. Maybe good to fill a target box?
A pain to cut up. Lots of steel in the bead, and some in the tread area too.
But a couple of pieces of the tread were cut to fit the target box, and placed in front of the steel plate (little wood piece is something to allow my camera to focus)
I may still need some sacrificial foam packing material in front of the tires to prevent some pellet bounce-back into the target, but these should last for a bit and prevent the pinging of the metal plate. Plus I feel like I did some recycling!
