What have you found to be the quietest backer for your targets? Looking for something to silence the pop of the pellet hitting the paper. Thanks for your helpful ideas.

You make want to look into foam from a camping pad or get some craft foam from a craft store it comes in large rolls. I am using the craft foam behind the lid of my DIY pellet trap.

Not much is going to silence the 'pop' of a pellet hitting the target paper unless you attach the target directly to something like plumbers putty or maybe a soft foam backing. Try filling your target box with old cloth - rags, old shirts &/ or old towels.

If the paper is loud and not the backdrop, I don't know what to suggest other than cotton t shirt material.
I have to be misunderstanding your scenario. Hammer strikes should be louder than pellet vs paper. Is it mounted directly to plywood?

Not mounted to wood, have put 3/8 thick dense foam mat behind the paper but can still hear the pellets hitting. Just looking for other options. Don't know if there are any. I can hear the action of the spring then the pop of the pellet impacting the paper.

Old tractor trailer mud flaps are my go to for lining my Outers trap.
Practically free in most junkyards.
Folded or layered car floor mats work too.
Layered carpet remnants if you don’t mind the fuzzies.

Another vote for old fabric. Stuff cardboard boxes w the stuff.

I use old blue jeans. Usually in a Amazon box. At the back of the box a 1/2 inch plywood, just in case! Quiet, I'm talking about 10 inches of jeans. Save all the pellets then use the lead to cast bullets.
