Tanks: DOT versus ISO 11119-3

Anyone here have any experience with the ISO 11119-3 certification? I have a new carbon fiber 300 bar tank that I cannot get filled because the dive shops are looking for a DOT cert but the tank has an ISO 11119-3 cert. The ISO cert is more stringent than the DOT cert and so is beyond the CFR requirements, but the shops say, "no DOT, no fill..."

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Never heard of iso certification before. Usually with cf tanks there ate CE certified and DOT certified. USA uses DOT and Europe uses CE. By law shops will only fill DOT tanks. I have a CE tank and my shop will not fill it. I got myself a yong heng and a gold filter and fill my own tank. Yong heng are $200 to $230 on ebay, free shipping. Nothing like having independent air supply. The money I save from my yong heng already paid for itself in fill fees and gas to travel to and back.

Yes, the dive shops have not heard of the ISO standard although a letter of interpretation from PHMSA confirms the ISO cert is adequate and legal.

I have an Air Venturi Nomad that I would like to use to top off only, once the tank gets down to 2500 or so; I would be topping off to 3200. This in an effort to prolong the life of the compressor.

I'm with you 2fast, I've been using a Y/H for 2 years now cant beat the price just keep it cool. I use Ice in the water. BTW the original water pump came with it was intermittent so I replaced it with a wet tile saw pump at home depot for 12-15 bucks (Ryobi).

Upper right hand corner of sticker sure looks like it say's "CE" ( for the UK, a quick google should bring it up) and as such does not meet osha/other U.S. regs.rules/restrictions so you'll not get it filled at most shops.

I bought my own compressor; It didn't blow up and it is working fine.

Valves $119.00

I see others are doing the same with their unfillable tanks.

Very nice FelixS! Regarding DOT versus ISO 11119-2 and lack of DOT with home filling may I ask what certified entity tested for ISO 11119-2 on the above tank and how can one validate ISO 11119-2 compliance? That's a huge savings you're sharing and thank you, how were you able to validate ISO 11119-2 versus an affixed label indicating ISO 11119-2?

I believe the testing is by SGS, an international inspection and testing company. I happen to deal with their labs, so I know them and know they are legit.

As per your link, yes, I went there when doing the investigation. I provided the Dive shop(s) with the information but they would not budge. I don't blame them for fearing liability, but give it time and they'll come around.

Apparently others are doing the same thing as I, so it's a proven way to go.

As a side note, you will see most (including FX) use the ISO standard on their gun bottles.
