Talon SS .22 Test Results of 12" to 18" Barrel Change

I have been using this older Talon I got back in 2000' for some tinkering and upgrades. A few months back I installed an Altaros regulator to improve the usable shot count and also an larger bottle. With the regulator installed I lost some fps even though it is adjusted to the maximum 150 bar. I believe its plenum size provides a little less air to the shot. Who likes loosing fps, not me so the solution to me was to install a longer barrel. R&L Airgun Supply sells the barrels and shrouds with internal cups to work with different AirForce rifles so, I order one to match my rifle and to keep it quiet. The rifle is now a couple of inches shorter with the new shroud opposed to the moderator I was using. The report is about the same though a little bit different in it characteristics. It was interesting too to see the relationship from fps increase to fpe results. Bill

"cherry"Good to see air force infromation, how many shots can you get before it drops off regulator? Nice tank how big is it? Is it heavier than stock? Great chart!
The tank size is 48 cubic inches which equals 786 cc and weighs 2.5 lbs without the Talon valve. Yes it is a little heavier than the OEM but only a few ounce but I don't know how much more. The regulator adds 1 7/8" to the overall length of the rifle and trigger pull. That would take the rifle with the factory bottle installed trigger pull from 14 to about 16 inches. That is why I got the shorter JDS Airman tank and now my trigger pull is about 12 1/2"s. I am now trying to figure out how to mount a recoil pad to the bottle but at 5'-8" the short trigger pull is not bad for me. I will add the Talon Tunes sells a carbon fiber tank that has metric threads which you would use with the metric to valve and tank bottle set-up. Plus it is shorter, weighs less and can be filled to 250 bar.

Presently I get 90 shots before it goes off the regulator. Most shots are within 5 fps at the most. Before the regulator with the original tank I only got about 40 shots within about 30 fps as I remember off hand. Altaros sells two types of regulators for the Airforce rifles which they call GunPower which is what I believe they call the AirForce rifle overseas. One regulator has metric threads on both the valve and bottle ends for bottles with metric threads like the OEM bottle. The other regulator has metric on the valve side and paintball or 5/8"- 18 UNF on the bottle side which works with the JDS Airman tank I bought. Here are the links to those sites. Bill

"jamieinmd"I cant get mine to shoot JSB pellets at all. Baffles me but the CPHPs shoot just fine.
I don't know what my new barrel will like at this point. So far I have just done the comparison from 12" to 18" barrel in the velocity department. Next I will determine b.c. for each pellet in this rifle and find the most accurate pellet. Then I will try to find an pellet accurate enough to fit my various shooting situations, like pesting and small game at various distances. Now I hope we can get a mild winter day to do this outside work. Bill
