Taipan Veteran slow leak through the barrel

I guess I should ask where I can get a poppet at? for .22 standard

Well, it was holding air just fine. Then I decided to remove the power plenum, and after that it's started the slow leak through the barrel. I did a balloon test to confirm that is the only place it leaks and not through the fill port.

Thing I have tries to fix the issue.

Changed orings for the end tube, swap out the huma with oem regulator, check the poppet ( I can't tell). Any suggestion where else I should try to fix the leak?


Anyone have a spare that they like to sell me? or trade for 3d resin printed magazine that I printed.

I took it out and clean the poppet and valve, still leaking through the barrel. Attached are pictures maybe the expert can help determine if it’s the poppet or valve?

Also, not sure why the valve got those purple coated thing on it. Tried to remove the coating but it’s hard coating.

I'm curious to know the story of this Vet. Was it perhaps purchased used? With verbiage along the lines of "power tuned?" There was a stretch of time a while back where lots of experimentation was being done on Vets valves, what I saw in the one I was inside that had been "improved" were not true improvements.

I only ask because of the blue dykem, as @miksatx called it. The connection of the blue to being used in machining gives me pause as I've never seen that on OEM Veteran valves. Which makes me wonder if somebody in your Vet's past was trying to "improve" things with "custom" and "proprietary" modifications. Furthermore increasing my suspicions is the fact that your gun won't hold air, another parallel problem with the one I saw that had been molested.

When I saw his pictures earlier, I was speechless. Still am. I put out this warning once or twice a year. Don’t try to hotrod your Taipan unless you’re a skilled machinist. You’re not calling the nice lady in NC with a list of parts you screwed up, then having them in a week or two. If it was used then the extra plenum on a standard tells me someone was chasing slug glory.

I only have hand drill, so I not too comfortable with that. But it's already leaking so it can't get any worse right?:oops:



Franklink- This vet was purchased used and HOLD air. After I removed the power plenum and put it back, it's starts leaking through the barrel.

Yep, sounds very familiar. A friend bought a used Vet that was actually sold as "improved." He lent it to me for a bit to see what I thought of the "improvements" compared to my OEM Vets. Gun was originally holding air but developed a leak while I had it. The owner/friend told me to go inside and see what had been done to it. Found the valve face had been heavily modified and there wasn't even enough material left to salvage that valve. Luckily the new owner is a skilled machinist and could make himself a new valve. I think I lent him an OEM valve out of one of mine to use as a copy, details are fuzzy there b/c it's been awhile.

Moral of the story? Just like @Vetmx said a few posts ago....for the love of all that is holy, don't go a dremeling on any part of PCP if you don't know what you're doing, ESPECIALLY a PCP from overseas that doesn't sell replacement parts.

Within it's normal use, a Taipan won't need any replacement parts (typically), so the fact that Taipan doesn't offer them is a non-issue. Parts procurement are only a problem when somebody screws up OEM parts.

I have no issue filling, it can still fill up to 250b everytime, just slow leak overnight 50b+ drop and it's not temp relate.

A machinist could likely get you back in business, which may be the only option.

Looks to me like somebody tried to dremel it, with maybe a large round ball abrasive stone? Or maybe even a round head brass bolt in a handheld drill with some lapping compound? I think you're going to need more precision than that, ie a capable machinist.

I vaguely remember somebody jumping on here on AGN and reporting that they were able to work through one of the distributors and Taipan to get some specific parts included in their next shipment, but that seems atypical. I called Utah Airguns and asked about parts availability around a year ago and they said, nope.

Let us know how it works out and how you get it resolved.

First off this is coming from someone who has never done any work on a PCP gun other than re-crowning barrels, repairing stripped out setscrews and working on triggers.....

That purple stuff on there, whatever it actually is, looks fairly 3 dimensional to me. I think I would first try removing all of that chemically with something that won't hurt brass. Denatured alcohol as suggested, MEK, Acetone, citrus paint remover etc. If it still leaks, could you then lap the poppet to the brass face as described in the link Nervoustrig link on GTA?

I'm hoping to fix a poppet face as you describe. But I can't see pictures in the link you provided. Any chance you could post those pictures in this thread? I'm particularly unsure what you are doing with the sandpaper with the 20 punched holes.
