Taipan Vet. Shorty ...??

Great question, I’m going to be getting one someday and that’s what I wonder about as well. I lean towards the .177 because of light recoil and bull pups being harder to shoot than rifles. Can’t wait to see what owners think! Might not come in .177, but the Edgun Leyla does. I’ve never heard anything bad about either one. Well...price,ha ha.

Never heard of one in .177.

I have the Vet compact in .22 and it'll do everything you need it to. I get over 40 shots on a single fill slinging 18.3's @ 865 fps. I have no problem doing headshots on squirrels at 50+ yards with Polymags. Haven't had the opportunity yet, but I would be plenty confident in 75+ yard body shots, as I've gone out to 100 yds on targets and held sub 1.5" groups of a less than suitable stand.

I'd say get the .22 first and THEN the .25 short lol

I have both and will never sell them.

The .22 is:

  • Quieter.
  • More shots per fill -50 vs 30 @ 30fpe and 42fpe respectively.
  • Easier to shoot accurately due to minute, almost non-existent recoil.
  • Plenty of power for most backyard pests. Can even be dialed up to around 35 fpe if needed.

By the way this .22 shorty was previously owned by davecole

Can't believe you parted with this one, Dave but I'm glad you did :) It's a shooter!

Good luck with your choice, gadballs9 and keep us posted.

Matt

Erics,

With my particular gun/barrel, the 13.43 are just as accurate as the 14.3.

In the fall, I had the time and opportunity to shoot through a field target course again, after the official match, using the Veteran at 20 fpe. It was just for fun and an experiment to see how the .22 would do. At the time, i was thinking the 14.3 was the winner pellet for the gun so that's what i used. I shoot open class so shooting from a bumbag and harness (the distance from the bottom of the forearm to the top of the scope rail on the Veteran negates the need for a knee riser-a closed fist on the knee gets the gun right where it need to be to line up without being too hunched over-kinda cool). I used my scope to range, same as if I was shooting a course for an official score. Anyway, I hit something like 33/40. That was just a few less then I hit in the official run-through the course with my field target specific gun. So, the potential is there to make it a dual use field target and really nice general use airgun, if you're hoping to do that.

You do need to know that a .22 gets pushed more in wind than a .177, when they are both right under 20fpe. The "bigger caliber = more resistant to wind" argument only holds true when the bigger caliber has more energy, at least in my experience.

I have since learned that the gun does very well with the 13.43 gr jsb also. I haven't had a chance to run those through a field target course but I'm sure they shoot a little flatter than the 14.3. I've lately been using the 13.43 as the primary pellet for the gun and pretty happy with how it is doing in my pdog, ground squirrel, Euro dove, and starling fun. That 24inches is just perfect for a truck gun. So much nicer than trying to maneuver a long gun in and out of the window for each shot. The low power keeps it nice and quiet with factory moderator too.

I think you'll like it for your intended use.
