Taipan Vet. 22 Standard and 17.5 NSA slug(UPDATE w/ PICS)

Been wondering if the Taipan .22 standard with LW barrel would should NSA slugs well. Particularly the 17.5gr slug.

Short answer is yes it will!

I did a lot of research and it seems many have tried shooting slugs out of taipan, but most posts I have read have been taipan longs with the CZ barrel. And there has been mixed results.

So received my order of NSA 17.5gr .2165 slugs. My taipan was tuned to shoot Jsb 18gr at 900fps. The first shot of the 17.5 NSA was 830fps. I cranked up the hammer spring and it topped out at 933fps with the NSA. At least that was as far as it could go until my gun would not cock. Lowered my Hammer spring until I was at 910-915 FPS and shot some groups.

I got at least 50 shots from a 250bar fill. Not too shabby for 32fpe with slugs.

To my surprise the accuracy was very good! 50 yard groups were consistently 1/2in to 3/4in groups. This is from a dirty barrel!

Then I shot my 100 yard spinner and the wind drift was MINIMAL. The most I had to hold over was half a mil. My weather app on my phone says 7mph wind right now.

Time to clean the barrel and see what the groups look like then. This is very promising. Pictures next time!

I have the long and actually have both the nsa 17.5 and 20.2's. I'm back to shooting pellets with it at the moment though as I'm "learning slugs" and how they perform as compared to pellets. In other words - I don't think I've found a "magic speed" with them yet that gives me good consistent grouping both inside and outside of 50 yards. I'm pretty sure it has the LW barrel - apparently most of the Taipan's do now. (? yes? ) It's a laser with the jsb 16's - I've got a couple of tins of 18's inbound - looking forward to trying those out. Back to the slugs though - my experience has been (so far) that they are frighteningly accurate the further out you go. Go figure. ( lol ) Yeah - I know - they should be - aerodynamics, BC, shape, etc . . . . being relatively new to airgunning in general, and most definitely slinging slugs - I'm just not used to groups getting better / tighter the further out I go. ( usually it's the other way around . . . lol )

Had some more time today to get the taipan more acquainted with the 17.5 NSA slugs. still have not cleaned the barrel because it’s still shooting good.

Target was set to 50 yards.

wind speed today was 11 mph.

there could be some human error in the groups due to the wind moving me and didn’t have a rear bag.

So far the magic number for NSA 17.5 for my gun is 915fps.

I tested 900-930fps with the slugs.

Groups are circled in yellow. Most are 5 shots each.

The 5 shot groups measured with calipers are the 2 best groups. This was at 915fps

These slugs are very consistent and so is the taipan!

check out my chrono! first time ever for a dup5!

next test is to try some 100 yard groupings. Hopefully accuracy is still there.

Well, besides some very good shooting I think you just invented/ discovered Mother Nature's splatterburst targets...! 😄

With the light just right, you'll get to see your hits long range...! 👍🏼

LOL you are correct. As soon as the morning sun comes up behind the cactus, it is SUPER easy to spot those tiny holes. The slugs make long range shooting much easier.

To shoot slugs through a slower twist barrel with a choke you generally want to go with the lightest slugs in a smaller diameter and push them upwards of 900 fps. This is important because they are spin stabilized and if they spin too slowly they won't be stable or accurate. The tight choke can both slow them down and deform them which is why the smaller diameters usually work better.

Also, slugs tend to lead a barrel faster so they require more frequent cleaning. Polishing the barrel can reduce the leading and lengthen the time between cleanings.
