Machine drill steel to shape using CNC lathe? Or since I wanted to make a die on a budget I ground a drill bit to the shape I wanted best as I could by hand.

I am not a turner, I have had a small lathe for two months, but I made myself such a tool.
It looks what it looks like, the rest of the unnecessary material is sanded with dremel, only the last 10mm is important.

We are into making swaging equipment and I would say that this is a commendable effort, Results are stunning. The only downside of your D bit reamer is that it cannot be remade as it is. once it wears out after 3-4 sets you will have to make a new one and it won't last that long. Other than that, the results are incredible and remind me of our Initial R&D phase where we had to get such bits done. DID they work? YES they did. So you are on the right track.
