Tuning Stoeger X20s Makes a loud CLANK when I shoot.

Thanx for the reply.

.22 Caliber

Tried:

Premier Ultra Magnum 14.3 grain
Gamo Rockets 14.3 grain
Premiere Hollow point 14.3 grain
Benji Discover 14.3 grain
Crosman P022 ??? Grain
X-Sport 13.2 grain

Same noise with all. Wish I had a Chrono to see if it is pushing the pellets at the FPS it should. It feels like it is not.

Could it be possible the piston seal is frabbed and not giving enough resistance for spring causing it to slam the front of the housing?

Thanx,
Rick

Bear with me due to rambling thoughts...lol

You had it apart so how did the spring, lubrication and that piston seal look? Dry gun and worn seal could allow for that piston to slam at the end of the stroke.

I keep thinking piston slam because at least for now it's the only thing coming to mind for the metallic CLANK you hear firing.

Random lame thought but how old is your rifle?

Maybe something as simple as a good cleaning out, new piston seal and fresh lube would fix things??

Sorry for the ramblings, just trying like you to sort this in my head.

well sometimes the best way to figure things out is to talk it through. I understand ramble...

well for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the piston all the way out...YET!

But is was oily as crap in the tube, and I'm sure i didn't do that.

I'd say its about 6 years old. but when I first got it I shot it off and on for about a year, and got frustrated and stuck it in the gun cab, until this summer. I pulled it out hoping it had miraculously healed it self, but it didn't.

Now it personal. I'm gonna figure out whats wrong with it if its the last thing I do.

going to try get the piston all the way out tonight to inspect it better. let you know what I see.

thanx for the response

Take this with a grain of salt as I've never had or torn one apart, but most likely the end of the cocking arm is holding up the piston. Probably have to take the barrel off to get the arm out of the slot.

The oily stuff is what more than a few companies use to lube internals and I think it's more a rust inhibitor than an actual lube. Moly paste is way better and I get mine from ARH. Doesn't take much and his small tub is enough to do an easy 10-12 rifles: https://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/catalog/item/251484/42989.htm

You might actually try emailing Stoeger USA and ask if they have a schematic of the rifle they'd be willing to send you along with asking about both a piston and breech seal (never hurts to have a spare in the tool box) if you end up needing one and if you're gonna open it, you might as well and I honestly have no idea where you might find one unless another member who has comes along and can tell you: https://www.stoegerindustries.com/contact

I've emailed stoeger, but not too hopeful.

From their website:

Can I modify or repair my rifle? Can I take it apart?

No. Never take apart your rifle. Doing so could be dangerous because of a powerful compression spring inside all Stoeger Airguns. Contact Stoeger Airguns for repairs.

warranty.

Oops Too late. Wasn't under warranty any more any way.

Did order some Moly paste.

Well looks like you guys were right. I disassembled the rifle and found the piston almost fell out (not much friction) so piston gasket wasn't great, and EVERYTHING was soaked with oil. So I cleaned out everything, warmed up the gasket and reformed it slightly, added a little silicon grease (as my other grease wasn't here yet), reassembled, and viola! No more clank.
I've only fired about 6 shots through it but so far so good.

Going to order new seals and replace and re-grease it when the Moly gets here.

Thanx for all your help.

Any suggestions for a good red dot scope (budget for this gun)

Thanx,

RICK
