There may or may not be a few things going on depending how much credence you lend to an unsubstantiated claim from a friend of a friend.
Your parts and support in the US actually come from Anschutz North America, as J.G. Anschutz gmbh owns a majority intetest in Steyr Sportwaffen. For all intents and purposes outside of branding, they are the same company.
There MAY or MAY NOT be a move on to differentiate between the brands, or create a distinction between the two as a precision target entity and a sporting arms entity. What that translates to is, Anschutz may remain the precision target rifle platform while Steyr is relegated to sporting or hunting platforms. The opposite may also hold true, but as Anschutz is calling the shots, it would stand to reason that they would protect their status in the precision 10 meter community.
While it is not out of the realm of possibility that Anschutz could decide to discontinue the production of Steyr products in favor of their own namesake products, it would seem unlikely owing to the popularity of Steyr products.
Whether or not there is some geopolitical reason for the move, I can not say.
I will say that there is proposed legislation in the US that does ban the importation and ownership of the Steyr AUG specifically, and it is called out by name in the legislation along with several other models of rifles.
POSSIBLY someone took the mention of Steyr in the proposed legislation as a blanket ban or prohibition on Steyr branded products?
